I wanted to paint something big, and I have only one of my three Balrog's painted. So here are some WIP shots of him. This is the plastic Balrog, so I basecoated him after assembly and began painting. Then I realized I wasn't going to get away with not filling the gaps. So I did that too. The last two shots are the same, just with the focus of the flash on the Balrog, and then the base to get a better look at the actual color.

Nice work bud - drybrush a little black onto the very top of the flames on his back - will make all the difference.

Ah, there's nothing like a nice, blazing balrog on a cold winter's evening. :)
I too have a bunch of balrogs (that is almost certainly not the correct collective noun) but ironically the only one I have completed was the version about to be defenestrated by Young Master Gandalf off the top of Durin's Tower.
The story of my life: doing everything back to front.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Yes, my painting slowed down a bit with hunting season and all. But we have a week of single digit temps ahead of us which is going to freeze everything up and bring an early end to duck hunting, but bring an early start to painting again. Here are a couple more WIP of the balrog. I finished up the base (sans the flames) and did the Balrogs arm. Not entirely sure if I like the result yet. I feel like I should lighten it up a bit to match the body more.

DMS, I took your advice and drybrushed some black onto he flames. It comes out a little light in the picture, but let me know what you think.

The black looks great to me but the base is something else, very simple yet stunning use of OSL
Mr Ferny I believe you are raising your standard.

Yep the black look great buddy - if you want to lighten it and give the flames more contrast then take a little watered down white (make sure you wipe away the blob of paint from the end of your brush before touching the model to avoid pooling) and where the flames meet the balrogs body feather in a little white as this is where the flames would be hottest - hence white hot.

looking outstanding so far bud.

Quick break from the Balrog...I was able to get a hold of one of Brent's Bilbo's Birthday Bash hobbits! Here is the finished product.

Oh, and a Rivendell elf knight taking a nap. haha

Great work, the flames look life like, first time I have seen that base, is it from the plastic kit Bill?

This is really coming along Bill, love what your doing.
This may be a photo issue but if not can I raise this observation. To increase the look of being literally white hot, I would like to see the flames white around the base of the flame along the back and also across the shoulders.
The horns are looking the part as well.

The Balrog is shaping up very nicely, the flames/lava is very well executed.

Thanks so much for all the comments! here is an update. I made the plates on the body bigger to enhance the "glow" effect.

Now that I see the pics, I think the white in the flames is to uniform in height. Needs some variability I think.

I agree on the white but this is looking fantastic. Bring some of the white from the flame across the shoulders and back so that the area looks hot and not just the ' upright ' part
