The thing is, and this topic does fit in this section........

I dont see Rohan as competitive at all. I mean.....I now we've seen the battle reports of Thermo, his Knight of the Pelennor, and Sons.

Other than that though, Rohan seems so utterly weak.

Generally, the heros are pretty good for their points.

But the troops have so few options, and their options are weak. Riders have a good bow limit, but if you move its hard to hit, and the bow strength is trash.

Warriors of Rohan and Royal Guard are ok, but they are weak. Outriders and Rohirrim are ok units, but against high defense forces or strong cavalry, you cant do much.

Sons of E are the only real good troop, but they cost the price of 2 elite units pretty much, or 3 or 4 of other models.......

Does anyone have a good idea of an army or has seen one in action thats awesome.
Ill probably just get rid of what I have if I cant manage to think of anything good.

Dont mention the GBHL battlerep army Im obviously aware lol.

They may not be the most competitive but I find them the most enjoying to play and that is enough for me !

You can upgrade your warriors to strength 4 with grimbold, that is an amazing tactical advantage as this is highly unexpected from the evil side.
Most of the time evil is playing with defence 4 or 6, so strength 4 gives you a nice punch.
And rohan actually is all about tactics just like every cavalry based army.
Playing it right can prove you invincible, playing it wrong and you will get slaughtered.

I'm not going to mention Thermo's GBHL army (having been the one to help him create it in large parts), but I will mention that Thermo knows how to use them properly.

I disagree with anyone that says that Rohan are a weak army. They're not in the slightest and I actually counter that they are potentially one of the strongest (without having to tailor a list to make them be so - E.G. as opposed to an all Ringwraith on Fellbeast list, it's strong in itself).

The problem is, people struggle with using them effectively. They're not a beginner's army for immediately winning - they're one where you have to understand how your opponent is playing and fully understand how to get the most of your models, then use it. Play conservatively, hit and run, use your superior number of bows and maneuverability to your advantage and when you outnumber them, start picking off the stranded elements with double charges.

I never understood why people thought Rohan struggled, until I played as them and then realised it's because thy play so utterly differently to any other army in the entire game - they have elements that are similar (lots of bows like Grey company, for instance), but the blend means they don't play like a LotR army does. Then I started to play against them (Thermo in control) and saw him quickly picking up on what worked for them - maybe because he was learning the rules roughly at the same time as learning the army.

But the bottom line is - if you know how to use them, they are one of, if not THE, most powerful armies out there, without even factoring in how you build them.

Wait a second... You're saying that they have lots of bows, does this mean that their riders aren't restricted to the bow limit?

Honestly I play Rohan and they are highly effective. They play differently of course since they have no shield wall formations and standard phalanxes, but I rarely lose with Rohan. If you play them like you play Gondor, then you will lose. But honestly I find that they have plenty of options! Even more than Minas Tirith. Think about it...They have standard infantry with longer range throwing weapons, they have Heavy infantry who don't fear anything (Rohan Royal Guard), they have upgrades for higher strength which combined with axes that they come with standard - they can kill very fast, They have some of the best light cavalry and heavy cavalry in the game, excellent and abusive heroes (im looking at you Gamling), they have archers that don't need to worry about standfast or distance (Outriders).....What is not to like about this race. They are highly unique! If you are looking to just march on an enemy and don't play with finesse, then yeah I agree that this army is not for you

Riders of Rohan do not count toward your bow limit.... so yes, they can have unlimited bows, making them some the the best light cavalry ever, especially since they also have longer range throwing weapons, shields, and expert rider.

Yes. If you're not up on that, then you might not know that throwing spear's range has been boosted to 8" in the Hobbit rules.

Please do mention!

:D

Jokes aside, it's a tough army to use, pretty unforgiving and have lot's of element which could hold it back. But like assessing any strategy, it's about maximising your strengths and nullifying your weaknesses.

Very general point, but the most important point of all is, it's a fun game and they are ultimately, competitive or otherwise, fun to use :)

I have to say that Rohan is an excellent army in my experience, it takes some thought to use but they are great once you have some experience with them :)
