I shade and highlight the cloak as normal then paint the freehand on in a darker colour than i want the finished pattern or writing to be (usually snakebite leather) once this is done i add the weathering to the cloak. Last of all where the fold are most prominent i highlight the freehand again with bleached bone. With elladans and elrohirs cloaks being black i didnt want the freehand to be too prominent so skipped the final bleached bone highlight.

They all look great. But I'm going to limit myself to gushing about Elladan and Elrohir. They look fantastic! Painted to your usual absolutely incredible standard. What astounds me the most is the free - hand on the cloaks! I understand the concept of most the other techniques used (obviously I haven't mastered them to your level) but the free-hand continues to escape me. Well done sir

You're not kidding. I got to see these at the tournament and utterly jaw dropping doesn't quite do them justice!!!

Those Beorns look well assembled. Almost as if you did them in your sleep. ;)

Haha thats very good :yay:

I'll explain that a comment a little - I convinced Dave to assemble Beorn and the Bear on the first night of Desolation of Stockport - he commenced work at around 2 in the morning and I slipped immediately into a beer induced coma. So yes lol they were assembled in my sleep.

What Dave fais to mention is after he finished assembling them he set his phone alarm for 7 in the morning , hid the phone in my hotel room and left lol .... you can only imagine my disgust at 7 the next morning when awoken by BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP. says he didnt do it on purpose .... yeh right :)

Remember guys - Vomit Brown, not brown vomit. :)
The armoured twins - you have made them look great.
Beorn and Bear - wonderful painting but the fur sculpt on the Bear is a bit pants really. It feels like they said 'Get the head right and we'll stick it on any old bear shape'.

I'll try the vomit brown tip on my blacks. Are you to dry rush it or paint it in in layers??
Another question is how to stop your dry brushing looking "chalky"

Drybrush it Steve - if you paint it on you will be effectively painting your model green. It is meant as a really subtle highlight.

The chalky effect left by drybrushing is the big reason i tend not to use a drybrush at all other than on fur and chainmail. After drybrushing an area try washing with a heavily diluted wash. This will help to get rid of the chalky effect.

Latest Commission for the Great British Hobbit League (GBHL) Eowyn Ft & Mtd. Had fun painting this piece, gave me the chance to practice more blue/white NMM. Incredibly difficult but pleased with the result and it took me around 30 mins to complete the sword as opposed to 3 hours the last time i attempted it.

Not a bad job at all on what I consider fairly poor sculpts. I found that when I painted my Eowyn foot she had that elongated top lip, almost like she should have a brigadiers moustache.

I like the foot model a lot. I'm not a fan of NMM but it's not bad. It may just be the picture but the mounted one's face looks off. Like the sculpt is portraying her as having Asiatic roots lol idk, mine seems to not have had that problem. I also am not a fan of the spear arm (the sculpt, your painting is fine) so I converted mine with an arm and sword from a plastic numenor swordsman.

Again the painting is good but I think the sculpt lets you down a little on the mounted one. But that foot slogger is terrific

Edit: it's the lip on the mounted. I think it's a little too dark, I'm not saying lipstick red but I think that's what makes her look different. Idk why not on ft as well, only the mounted one has me feeling that way

I like all of the painting, the cloak especially so, except the sword.

I have never been a fan of NMM or Sky/Earth NMM, it never looks realistic to me. And even with yours, the painting is right up there with how the technique is taught, but I have never been able to find accurate source material of real blades that can make this effect. I even use my own swords and at best can only find one light spot reflecting the sun. It is just the stubborn art teaching in me to draw what you see, not what you think is there... So I can't wrap my head around the technique (even if I could I still would have to develop skills to paint it after, ha). I do like the color, sky blue is beautiful, and as I said, you have done the sword the way it is described to paint nmm, so well done. Take that with a grain of salt, since I am not up to your skill level, I may feel differently if I ever reach that point and want to experiment. Huge Respect.

It's mines! My preciousssssss!

Beautiful work! Interesting to hear the comments on NMM... having seen it up close at Desolation of Stockport, the interesting thing was that you can't tell... it just looks awesome and realistic. Whereas on the pictures, it looks more obvious.

Is that something you've found Kev? That the pictures do NMM less justice than seeing them for real does?

Yep I have found that NMM is horrific to try and photograph. It either has high contrast or seems completely washed out. Maybe I need a better camera. I'll keep trying tho.

Cheers for the comments guys.

Good job! The nmm is well done, but I'm not a huge fan of the blue white nmm. It looks too much like a warhammer 40k power sword or whatever they're called. Everything else looks great though :yay:
