Which do you prefer? Lego's triple shot, or precise shot? I understand that both have their purposes and benefits, but I am trying to generate some friendly discussion. Up until recently I have always defaulted that the triple shot is better based on the premise that out of 3 shots there is only a 4% chance that all 3 would miss (0.33 x 0.33 x 0.33 = 0.037 or rounded up to 4%). Which means their is a 96% chance that at least 1 shot will hit (not dmg, but hit. The math changes quite a bit once you start adding in the probability of dealing dmg. If Lego needs a 5 to wound his odds of hitting at least once *and* rolling a 5+ for dmg drops to 31%).
Anyways, I was thinking about the single auto hit. For starters, no "in the way" or anything else to worry about. Just a single hit. However, in the same 5+ to wound scenario occurs, the probability of rolling a 5+ is only marginally better at 33%. Now, with that in mind, you are only rolling once as opposed to 3x followed by an additional dmg roll for a total of 4 rolls. As I grow more battle savvy, this once odd precise shot portion of Lego's special rule is looking better and better. What is your opinion?

I think triple shot is better for majority of targets.
His auto hit is for making sure that horse, or banner, or anything else you want deader than dead is dead.
I've never had much luck with Legolas.. I was eyeing up Bard though once I realised his bow was S4....

I far prefer the triple shot. True the odds are what you point out but you aren't (in the listed calculations) taking into consideration the chance he hits 2 or 3 times and then how much easier that single wound is to achieve. I'll trade the slight dip in he single hit chance of wounding for the potential upside

Yeah I normally go with triple shot as well. I'd only use precise shot if there was an in the way. It's basically 50/50 up to then, so I don't want to waste a round of shooting if I can help it hitting some guy in front, otherwise I would have killed him the turn before.

I only use the Auto Hit if I need to shot into combat or want to sniper a nazgul or a similar target.. in any other situation I would go with the 3-shot

triple shot: use when there is nothing in the way and you want to remove normal troops or hero's that you can get a good shot in.
auto single hit: when the target is in combat a 5+ in a way roll.
both have their use's
