I've just about got the knack back for painting horses again. They are actually quite fun.
The ones I've worked on so far though are all very dark and brown in color.
I'd really like to paint Legolas/Gimli on horseback. But white scares me a little still... could someone maybe give me the rundown on painting Arod please? Is it a similar process to the method folk gave me for painting the white horse on the Rohan banner?

Thanks in advance

I haven't painted Arod but I have done other white horses etc.
The general principle for me is to base coat completely white, effectively doing your final highlight all over.
Now it's a case of doing your shading. Start with only just off whites. Have them thin and only enough paint on the brush so that the paint dries within seconds. I can't stress the importance of so little paint on your brush. If you have too much it will gather and cause water marks or a grain effect. You literally want to see a slightest change in colour as the paint dries.
It is a case of building these thin glazes for your shadows. You can gradually increase the darkness but with white you don't need to go too dark, however that can be a personal choice, so see what you think.
Make sure you leve just small amounts of your white highlight to make it punch a bit more.

I like Gandalf the Grey's advice here. I would only add to look at pictures of white horses as you will get to know exactly how the muscles and shadows play on them in real life instead of guessing or assuming.
