Looking good and loving the winter theme! Bilbo has just moved up my paint priority list.

Welcome back mate, it's been too long. Love your work again and I think these are some of your best.
Legolas is wonderful, great bow string addition.
Bilbo is very clean and sharp, best of the three.
The warg looks nice but on close up I feel there is too much drybrushing.

Great to have you back here.

Thanks again for your kind comments!

@Gandalf: I see what you mean about the warg, but I guess the photo is just not doing him justice.. I could have worked on some finer details on the fur maybe, but when I look at it in the display I'm quite happy with how it turned out. I will try to improve that with the next fur-y beast that dares to get in range of my brush though :)

My bext project won't be LotR-related, at least not at the first glance. On the other hand, Norse mythology was a big inspiration for The Professor, so I guess it's ok to add a drakkar to my thread :)

Love the warg base and saliva effect. Legolas looks awesome, that is a good version of him to keep in the film scheme.

Thank you Sithious :)

Here's an update for the longship. In contrast to the image on the packaging I decided not to give the ship a head of metallic look, but rather carved and coloured wood, which is after all closer to the original ships.
I also decided to colour some of the planks after the example of a reconstruction, named "Sea Stallion of Glendalough"

That looks like it's coming along very nicely.

Excellent work, so far. Is your "Sea Stallion" in scale for LotR?

So, here's a small update, but I also need your help with a decision.

The deck is painted and glued into place, the mast is standing as are the oar holders (yet unpainted though):

The next task will be to put the (64! ) viking shields into their place and that's where I am stuck at the moment. There came decals within the package, and some of them do look quite nice I have to admit. BUT they are still decals and I fear for the "natural" look of the model, if I use those..

Would painting the shields myself be an option for you? I'd go for some more "down to earth" patterns like in the last picture.

Decals:

PS. @ Erunion: Well, the ship model is in a scale of 1:50, so it's a smaller scale than LotR, but still big enough to get away with it I guess ;)

Painted for me, they would simply look more authentic. You can use the designs from the decals.

I'd vote painted as well. If only because it makes the piece that much more visually impressive

I'd go painted too. The designs look fairly straight forward to paint on. Is going to look great!

If you go with the decals i always air brush a filter of matt lacquer with a small amount of mid-brown or black mixed in to make a translucent paint, this takes the edge of the crispness and looks more authentic. Its a technique i use on aircraft and works really well

The real question is: "are you going to paint the giant Viking head on a shield too?" Seems a bit off scale -wise to me

Thanks mates! Painted shields it is then. I tended to go with this option anyway, but your backing made the decision :)

@Harfoot: Thank you a lot for that tip! That sounded very helpful! :)

Haha, no James.. the head is for the sail, but I'm not going to use that.. since
A) it's a horned helmet.. I mean seriously???
B) I wanted a raven or something like a gripping beast on the sail anyway
Maybe something like that:

Here's an update on the shields. I still have to paint the rim and the boss, but colourwise they are finished I guess. I'm not sure though, if I add a few more details like runes, or leave them now as they are.

It's been a few day since I've been active here for the last time I notice and I missed a lot obviously.. Not sure if you missed me though. :P
Different "real life troubles" have held me back from the hobby and I rather spent my spare time straying through the woods and going on bike tours. Anyway... Let's see if can make the 'comeback', after all I have a few projects on the wait list and my lazy backlog still hasn't started painting itself...
