Anybody seen West Wind's Lucifer's War minis up close? The Guardians of the White Gate Minions look like they could be good proxies for Foot Knights of Dol Amroth.

I found another site, I have no experience with him but think it very usefull for conversion parts although the have fantasy ranges, but I find those somewhat expensive and they do not go well with LOTR more warhammerish:

But I find the shields and some heads&weapons very usefull:

Great thread here! Agree with lots posted above. Here are some others:

So, I'll second eBob - I'm using highlanders as Clansmen of Lamendon. (They're even more delicate that Perry LotR sculpts, but they work.)

Image

His Scottish pike could serve as Men at Arms of Dol Amroth:

Image

I came close to buying these English foot to use as Axemen of Lossanarch, but he wouldn't sell me just the figures with axe and poleaxe (link to pics is glitchy, see webpage)

http://www.ebobminiatures.com/products/rebellion.htm#1

And for Blackroot Vale archers, I also bought these Welsh archers to, which like the clansmen are very slight next to GW, but absolutely fine on tabletop:

Image

But that was years ago. Today, I'd prefer the size and poses from Claymore Castings. In particular these as Axemen of Lossanarch:

http://claymorecastings.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=20&product_id=126

I like the polearms given the pike rule for this unit in WotR, but I might replace with poleaxes that I have from Perry War of the Roses and Thunderbolt Mountain weapons sprue.

Claymore's Highlanders would make great Clansmen of Lamedon or Axemen of Lossanarch, depending on your vision:

http://claymorecastings.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=20_45&product_id=122

For Mahud, I agree both with Perry plastic Sudanese (with Fuzzy-Wuzzy heads to look exotic) or Foundry, but instead of Azande, I'd sooner go with the Masai with feathered headdress:

http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/darkest-africa/ferocious-masai-collection-bcda011/

Both headdress and shield perfect shape to be painted as a red eye.

Or, the Tribal Warriors:

http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/darkest-africa/tribal-warriors/

Especially the ones with the war masks. Again, I want them to look exotic. Plastic Zulus from Warlord or Wargames Factory would be easy, but they're bland and look like, well, Zulus.

For Corsairs of Umbar (or as I use them in Gondor forces, freed Black Fleet galley slaves) I definitely like these Perry Azerbaijanis:

https://www.perry-miniatures.com/product_info.php?products_id=2122

https://www.perry-miniatures.com/product_info.php?cPath=23_33_53&products_id=2123&osCsid=faqpdip2b1et7g1n3ak642qja2

And as Corsair archers, these Saljuk archers from the same range:

https://www.perry-miniatures.com/product_info.php?cPath=23_33_53&products_id=2124

Maybe mixed with some of these Zanzibari Slavers from Foundry's Darkest Africa:

http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/darkest-africa/zanzibari-slavers

http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/darkest-africa/baluchis/

For Khandish infantry, I have these Old Glory Voynuk from their Vlad the Impaler range:

http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DIF-17

I'm told these Black Tree/Halequin Fantasy Saracen are more robust (bigger heads and hands) than GW, but would make great axe-wielding Variags:

http://www.blacktreedesign.com/europe/product.php?productid=24016&cat=2394&page=1

For Harad elite infantry, I'm going to get these Artizan "Black Guard"

http://artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1138

http://artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1139

And for Harad elite cavalry these Hasham Guard:

http://artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1141

Maybe with weapon swaps to scimitars.

Because I HATE, HATE, HATE the Serpent Guard sculpts with the silly horns.

Pfew! It's late and all this copy/paste is tedious. I'll add a few more later. Hope you enjoy my enthusiastic contributions to a great thread!

Concerning the Ebob Minis:

They are very thin if you compare them with GW Figures. They are in real 28mm scale. That means they are often 2-3mm smaller as the gw-Minis. They look like kids next to the figures of Games workshop.

Comparsion:
Image
On the left hand an Ebob Norman who is in the GW 30mm scale. Left a Longbowman from Ebob, too.

I do not know if the clansmen are the same scale, but be careful!

Greetings
Advario

Anybody found a good proxy for Castellans of Dol Guldor? I'd love to build a unit of those.

I have a similar question about "Black Numenoreans". Never liked the GW models. Goofy.

Haven't found any suitable alternatives for the above 2 requests, but I will keep looking... HOWEVER Perry Miniatures have some pictures of upcoming plastic archers which look better for LOTR (IMO) then the current War of the Roses Archers....

https://www.perry-miniatures.com/images ... amples.jpg

https://www.perry-miniatures.com/images ... r_line.jpg

https://www.perry-miniatures.com/images ... _sprue.jpg

Might have to pick some up to use as Woodsmen of Brethil, or Turin's outlaws from the Silmarillion... they would work good for Blackroot Vale Archers too if you want them to look different from your rangers of Ithilien.

I agree. They look more like they belong in Warhammer Fantasy rather than LOTR to me.

I'll keep looking, but thus far no luck. I like the Castellans design, just hard to justify the cost.

Also, this thread is great and has been very useful. I'd still like to know if anyone has seen West Wind's Lucifer's War minis up close? The Guardians of the White Gate Minions are particularly interesting as proxies for Foot Knights of Dol Amroth.

There are lots of possible proxies for Foot knights of Dol Amroth out there, including the Perry's. But most would require some form of head swap to get the right feel. For me that would be lots of heads. My son and I tend to build large units, 6 coys or more for our games.

These guys at least have some wing thingies on their helmets. You can paint the swan symbols on the shields. It's the robes that bother me a bit and I haven't seen any to know if the scale feels right. So, any help or thoughts would be well received.

No I have not seen them up close... sorry.

However looking at them , I think you could use them for Black Numenoreans as well, with minor conversions... They also look good for Dol Amroth. Maybe pick some up, and post comparison picks :-D It is not a bad price for 10 metal figures.... cheaper than 10 plastics from GW.

Hmm, for Castellans/Black Numenoreans, you could consider Conquest Games' Crypt Guardians or Demon Spawn, or maybe Mantic's wights (but those last ones have visible skulls, so might not work).

For Black Numenoreans that don't look like the GW minis, I'm at a bit of a loss, to be honest. Not because there aren't alternatives, but it's hard to know what you're looking for. I've seen people simply convert Numenoreans, with an appropriately dark color scheme, I've seen people use more heavily armored miniatures with an Eastern look, since the Black Numenoreans lived in and around Umbar, and I personally have thought of using Teutonic knights, especially those with the horned and bat-winged helmets, and an appropriately dark color scheme.

EDIT: One other cool conversion for Black Numenoreans that I saw was to give Army of the Dead soldiers Morgul Knight heads. That would be a very expensive conversion, though. In any event, if you could find appropriately evil-looking helmets, you could pop them onto the Army of the Dead figures and that works nicely.

Great suggestions. Thanks. Some of Mantic's might indeed work with a little conversion work. Also, I might try some of the West Wind minions. A fairly cheap experiment. If I do, I will post pics.

Adding suitable robes to Teutonic knights with the horned helmets might be nice for Castellans.

Of course, to me, Black Numenoreans are just Dunedain working for the opposition, so I am not convinced by the strange spikey dudes. If the various old FOTR era Numenoreans were a little better to scale, I'd suggest converting them, somehow. But they are teeny tiny compared to more modern figures. Even the metals.

Mithril miniatures have a couple of Númenórean figures which I use as the basis for a TA 1975 warband. However, if I had my druthers, I'd also use them for a War of the Ring era heavy infantry support for Corsairs and Haradrim. Alas, they aren't desperately cheap. But only a little bit more expensive than GW metals.

For Goblins, perhaps "Alliance Orcs" by "The Red Box". they are 1/72 scale plastics, but scale scale up well with LoTR Goblins. Note that "The Red Box" is a european company and should not be confused with "Red Box Games" Tre Manor's company

This fellow here has a review.
http://cheapfantasyminis.blogspot.fr/20 ... set-3.html

Here's a pic he made of a Caesar Brand 1/72 Orc, an Alliance Orc, and a mines of Moria Goblin.
Image

Another review showing them painted is here:
http://samsminisworld.blogspot.fr/2014/ ... inted.html

Not nearly as nice as GW goblins, but pretty good to me, though these might be soft plastic, so you'd need to use something like "Krylon Fusion" as a base coat to get good paint adhesion. The real bonus is that it's 48 figs for $8-12 depending on where you buy them.

There are also 2 other alliance orcs sets though the styling may be a bit different , and orcs on wargs are avialble in light and heavy versions. Also, half orcs which are pretty clear rip-offs of uruki, but being 1/72 they're a bit short.

One more line of minis to consider is "Vendel". They were OOP for a while, but are now sold by Sgt. Major miniatures as "Bloody Day 28mm Fantasy".
http://www.sgmm.biz/Bloody-Day-28mm-Fantasy_c_23.html
Not many comparison shots, but here's one showing their dwaves (bare metal) next to LoTR. A bit bigger but not terribly so.Image
The line overall is clearly targeted at LOTR, but I'm pretty sure it predates the Jackson films.

I'm particularly interested in their hillmen.
Image
and there's some interesting figs in the "Men" section as well.

In the historical section, there's some Persians that folks might find useful.
http://www.sgmm.biz/Persians_c_44.html
and alot of shields and weapons sold separately as well.

Does anyone have any scale pics of the Fireforge knights with some lotr figures. I am thinking of maybe them with ebob heads for Dol Amroth knights.

Don't have any pictures handy but I can tell you from close familiarity that FF models are larger than Perry-sculpted LotR. Tolerably so to use next to each other in separate units.

But my eBob miniatures (Highlanders as Clansmen of Lamedon, Welsh archers as Blackroot Vale) are even smaller than Perry and my hunch is that those heads might - MIGHT - look pinhead-esque once you plopped them on a FF body.

But maybe he sculpted them larger to mate with other figures.

Hi, I have a couple of questions regarding Warriors of Minas Tirith, Perry Minis and ebob's Dol Amroth heads.

Firstly, has anyone done any headswaps on the new Perry Foot Knights minis? I'm thinking of using the Perry bodies with WOMT heads, how do they scale?

Secondly (and if the first option doesn't work out), how do ebob's Swan helmets look on Perry minis? Are the Swan heads designed to be used on WOMT bodies or are they the wrong size?

Thanks!

That would be awesome, thanks! I live in New Zealand and I'm tempted to order some of the heads and the Knights but they'll take a while to reach me so it'd be great to get a sense of scale before I place the order.
