My first LOTR (and in fact first ever GW model) painted. Not sure whether to paint the base or not. Black's my hardest colour to paint, not handy considering this particular miniature.

Black *is* a hard colour to paint. Looks good, you should be proud!

haha, almost a year to the day I posted the original, I've made some (limited) progress.

I painted Theoden and Eowyn some time ago, but have only recently got their basing finished. Which is a happy coincidence as I've only just finished trimming the roofs on these two 4Ground Viking buildings I purchased at Hammerhead in February. I can't quite stretch to buying the full blown Hall that 4Ground do, but I think these two buildings, supplemented by some stuff that Matt has will fill the "Rohan Settlement" scenery requirement for a while, although the buildings could do with a bit of weathering and so forth, they look a little too clean for me.

I'm quite pleased with the figures look, the ordinary troops are simple block painting with an Army Painter Strong Tone wash, while the characters are getting a little more layering etc. Eowyn's eyes were a pig, my usual technique struggled since her hair is in the way when approaching from the side of the face. Still, they're not terrible.

Eowyn looks great! I also like Théoden, but I think you could highlight his shield with a bit of gold to make him pop.

Loads of great painting instructions online, my favorites are tale of two painters and the warhammer youtube channel.

Have you considered purchasing Warbases terrain? Simpler and cheaper than 4ground. Tale of two gamers did a how to on their dark ages terrain, that's where I learned about them.

The buildings look great. Maybe try your hand at building your own hall, foam cote, card stock and a bit of research and you can do it yourself.

Thanks for the replies. I purchased some more metallic (Vallejo) at Partizan last month, and as a result Théoden is sporting a nice new shiny shield and improved gold highlights elsewhere. Will take a new picture when I have something else new to show. In the meantime I've been getting War of the Ring bases done. Bought from Warbases, pva and sand followed by my usual basing colours and some GW flock. 35 bases done. Yes, 35. It was a tad boring.... :)

Played our first game of War of the Ring last week (not using my figures as clearly there's not enough... :) ) and I really enjoyed it. Nice fast game with plenty of action and involvement.

Is there some kind of tutorial online about something like that? I am working on a number of villages, a Rohan one included.

Finished off some Riders of Rohan eventually. Unfortunately had a mare with the varnish and it's resulted in some dusty/chalky "frosting" but I'm not redoing them all. They just look a bit grimy. I'm sure they'll blend in OK with the other 80+ Riders I have to paint.

Ah, sorry you had trouble with the varnish! It is really really discouraging to have these things happen in the hobby after all your hard work.

I think your work looks fab!
