Cheers, nice article that! I might 'scratch her eyes out' and shade - I use Reikland before the highlights anyhow. Generally take the approach you've described for Gandalf (I've painted a few of those!) I've also just ordered an 'Insane Detail' Army Painter brush too, so will see what I can achieve with that.

I have one but it's rarely used, usually only for eyes when the model demands it. It's hard to get the right amount of paint on it, and when you do it dries so quickly. Take proper care of a fine detail brush and that'll do most of the hard work.

I have a little Winsor and Newton like that - oh well, I'm going to try shading the eyes whilst I wait for my new brush.

Decided to start painting Hobbits - Don't think I've ever painted a Frodo... "For shame!" I hear you cry!

Not looking too bad, photo loses a lot of highlights, trying to find a decent milk bottle ;)

Looks nice for a first Frodo. I am pretty sure this is a lot better than what the photo suggests...and in the photo it looks good.

Cheers :)

Photo shows it at double size, I use my phone and snap as I'm painting. Smaller is better:

Thanks folks, hopefully get it finished up tomorrow. I'm not a big fan of the sculpt to be honest, but quite happy with my progress so far :)

Thanks! On a bit of a hobbit binge now...numerous Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin poses to paint to get the backlog down. Here's my Moria Sam - I've never painted sausages before.

Obviously though, to counter the reduction of my backlog - I've got Hobbits of the Shire, 4 hobbit militia, 4 hobbit archers on the way AND picked up 4 hobbit shiriffs cheap. Never ends!

It's going to be a busy week! Unless Hobbits is the challenge for February... ;)

Very nice work on Sam. I think you can do a little more with the hair, apply a dark brown wash and when dry re apply a further highlight. I think that will create more depth to his hair.

Cheers Corbulox. Thanks Gandlaf, I added some watered down Rhinox hide in the recesses of Sam's hair, much more defined now.

Finished off my Frodo and Sam:

Moved on to Merry:

Planning on painting a host of hobbits for this month's challenge, so this is all good practice. And good for my backlog!

I liked Sam's line in FotR when he brains a couple of goblins with the frying pan and says 'I think I'm gettin' the hang of this'.
Neatly painted. Excellent sausages :)

Thanks!

I love that scene, shame these Moria minis aren't the best. Think my favourite line of the trilogy is when Sam gives Gollum a good roasting about Po-tay-toes.

I'd say pardon the pun, but I've come to realise you're a fan! ;)

Great painting style, some of the best Hobbit sculpts even though they are plastic imo

Thank you Harfoot. I think the hobbit sculpts are pretty good, like the Gandalf too. Not a fan of the Boromir and Legolas personally. Also, the plastic doesn't bother me - I really like painting plastic. Perhaps it's the age of the sculpts, but the newer plastics seem to have a lot more detail. Saying that, the Sam was really nice to paint, plenty of detail to go at!

Much better with Sams hair. This is a simple but effective technique for adding definition, so worth remembering.

Not posted anything on my WiP thread for a while! I feel I've improved somewhat since my last Frodo. Planning on working my way through the first edition of the collectors guide.
