Can somebody sort out a problem please. In War of the Ring if cavalery attack foot soldiers, do the foot soldiers take off casualties before attacking back. We seem to think that if you don't cavalry don't really have advantage except lot of dice.
Many thanks.

Yeah, all casualties are removed before striking back. The order is monsters > cavalry > infantry. Cavalry also get their earthshaking charge rule aswell.

no worries mate. It does say in the rulebook but it can be very ambiguous sometimes.

As you said in your original post, if Cav DIDN'T remove Infantry casualties first then they would be slaughtered in the return strike. They still need to be sure to do significant damage when they hit or it's not going to go well. Flank attacks can help here since it limits how many enemy companies will have contact with you for retaliation purposes but also limits your own ability to deal blows. Rear strikes are even better as they limit the return dice and strike against a weaker side of the opponent.

For many of these reasons you may find multiple smaller formations of cavalry to be more effective than a couple large formations. The smaller ones can generally slip through and around larger formations and hit where they are most useful and at the same time are small enough that they are not very 'juicy' targets for spells, ranged fire, etc. I have made very good use of these small unit tactics with Warg Riders (their bonus for striking from the rear can make them even more deadly) and Haradrim.
