Thats really awesome stuff mate. Would you be willing to share the colour scheme for the armour? :)

For sure:
  1. Primed Black
  2. Base coat of Boltgun metal mixed with some Chaos black
  3. Drybush with Chainmail
  4. Heavy wash of mixed Devlan mud, Badab Black and a bit of Chaos Black
  5. Highlights with Chainmail
That's about it. A bit long for foot sluggers, but I like the results.

Those Uruks look great! I really like how "smooth" the armor looks. Great job!

Great bases. I made them like incandescent terrain, but yours are great.

A small update. Sadly, not from figures, but still an update!

Yesterday, I finished my first scratchbuilt base. As I wanted to magnetize them, I found it simpler to do them myself then to build GW's ones and convert them. The others are at the final sanding stage.

Here is the result:

The tray is a little longer (2mm) than GW, and a bit higher. Also, the bevelled edge is less sharp. After playing with it a bit, I found that is was a lot easier to pick up and had less tendency to slip, so it's all good. :)

Cool, the problem with the GW trays is that they have a tendency to mount each other when you push them forwards.

Yes, I noticed that in my first games. That's part of the reason for the less sharp bevel. Also, the base is a lot heavier than GW's (2 or 3 times at least) , so it naturally have less tendency to stack. I haven't tested it in game yet, but I do think it will go a lot smoothly.

I'll think about it. As there are already some articles online about that topic, I don't know if it is that relevant. If I do write one, I'll need to take more photos first, and find someone to spell check my writing (I'm a French speaker).

that's the smiley, Julie.

The trays look great. how will you be magnetising the bases? Small magnets glued on, of use actual magnes as bases?

Gentlemen, I must confess I have absolutely no idea of what you are implying.

Now, if you will be as kind as to excuse me, I have some rimming to do...

...on Uruk-hai base rims obviously.

There do seem to be interest enough for the article. Thank guys, it's fun to get comments and life in a thread. :) I'll take photos this weekend, while I do the rest of the infantry and start on the the cavalry bases.

I made two tests, with the same type of magnet (rare earth 6mm).
  1. First one is glued directly under the base. As the magnet is quite small in height, it don't touch the metal sheet, and the force is just strong enough to keep it in place when the tray is turned over. I can pick a Uruk-hai pikeman by the pike and it will come up without difficulty.
  2. Second test, I put a bit of putty first, with the magnet pushed into it. Then, the model is pushed on a hard surface to get the magnet flat with the table. I put a dab of glue between the putty and the base, and also between the putty and the magnet. That way, the model don't move at all, but I need the pull it by the main part, or the pike might bend or break. (That way of doing it I saw on a Hordes forum, to transport big models directly in a tool box. No need of a foam transport case.
I will go with the first option for the rest of the army. It's strong enough for the job, and also less work on each model.

First company of scouts painted. Presented on the first home made movement tray.

The other two companies are at the detail stage, so I will probably be able to finish them on time. For Lurtz and the other Fighting Uruk-hais however, I cannot say...

I like the Scouts a lot! :yay:

A few more shades of brown (on the cloth) might improve them a little, but I know you're trying to paint in a time limit so don't worry if this idea isn't feasible!

Keep up the good work!
