Osgiliath Board

I would suggest undercoating the whole board in textured paint and then paint that, after that use the Static Grass in a bag to cover the board.

This will provide a realistic looking ground texture as well as boost the realism of the grass.

Just Drybrush the whole board after coating with textured paint. But make sure you do not spray paint the bare Polystyrene as it will melt.

You can also get different colours of Static Grass if you are interested.

I have never used the sheets of static grass as I find it looks tacky and very unrealistic.

Thanks for the tips... yes i've never been keen on the 'sheet of grass' either. I think I'm going to give the bare polystyrene a coat of some kind of glue. Next i'll add the sand on & give that a brush of brown & add on the grass... I think i'll be using powdered grass for it is less expensive & i have a lot more of it than the static stuff.

That too is very effective for covering the board. And much easier to get than textured paint.

Is there a certain theme this board is taking? Any area specific terrain?

Well my plan is to have one side where the river divides them ( the larger area ) the wilderness with plenty of trees and hills. I'll use gravel and grass for that. The other side of the river will contain ruins & buildings so it's party like Osgiliath in a way. They'll be stuck down though.. the ones on the pictures are just some i made a while back... I know there not very good for i built them when i started.. but i haven't got round to making more for i find the bigger projects more fun

Even tho i haven't got any finished yet. My helms deep is now in the garage looking at me every time i enter.. It wants to be finished. lol Back to what i was saying... I'll have some kind of brick floor on the 'city' side.. not exactly sure what I'll do for that, either but up little cardboard bricks or buy the sheets of ready made bricks and just put that on.. but i find that makes it look less realistic for they're all exactly in line etc... Any suggestions would be more than welcome.

Here is a picture of one of the battles i had with my mates..

P.S. oh yes i forgot i will also be adding a bridge on one end & the end where the river slithers a way a bit will be a small march area for troops to pass slightly more easily... instead of swimming. I had the idea of boats but the rivers just too narrow for that.

For the bricks or tiles on the ground, if possible place them down before you do the sand.

Then you can blend it in underneath the sand so it doesn't look as if its just been plonked on top of the dirt. Because after time the dirt would gather on top of the paved ground as well as around it.

For the pavement I suggest scattering cardboard cut in to the shapes of tiles, even Plasitcard or Plastic could be used. If you are going for an Osgiliath type scene the tiles would be a lighter shade of grey or dull white.

I tried my luck at an Osgiliath board once, it actually turned out alright. As for the buildings in your picture I cant see them as the sight you have uploaded them to is blocked where I am currently. But any ruins can really be used.

perhaps cheap wallpaper with a brick patern is an idea for the pavement.

Thats a clever idea using some kind of wallpaper... never thought of that. Thank you for the tip & I'm actualy working on the board now.

I haven't really done much for I'm pretty busy sometimes & find it hard to find time to work on it. I started a small ruin with arches & part of a roof.

You're using pink foam for the surface of the table? You could draw the brick paving patterns directly into the foam with a 2H pencil (slightly blunted so it doesn't cut the foam). Then paint it all to look like bricks. I have used that technique on a game table for a shop last year (no pics though, sorry).

One thing I would suggest is using Flex-Stone to spray on the stone. Its much more textured than textured spraypaint, and comes in several colors at my local Wal-Mart and Hobby Lobby

It looks very nice so far. The building is turning out great! :yay:

Well i had a quick try at the floor area on the city side... They're pretty sad looking for i did it in less than 10mins... Ones the one where i drew in the bricks.. add paint (with a little flour/oatmeal to give it less of a smooth effect) and added grass in the cracks.

The second one didn't turn out too great for i mucked up the gravel side of things & it overlapped it too much. I painted the bricks, added sand in the cracks etc.... Any suggestions on how to improve.. or another method would be very helpful

I'm trying to get the city side of things overgrown, ruined and abandoned like Osgiliath or after the siege of Fornost where only the rangers entered...

I like it, I think you're being overly critical of yourself. Unfortunately I have little experience in the terrain area, so I can't really give any advice. :wink:

I agree with Anduril, you're being to harsh on yourself. It looks great!

If you're not satisfied with the results you're getting with the pencil, you could always pour plaster onto the area and then use an modelling knife to scour in the lines and create the flagstone look. Brian's article here, shows how to do this. The article is meant for basing, so I'm not sure if it would work well over a larger surface. It may be worth a try, however.

Well it's coming along.. I've decided to do the brickwork with the cardboard. It's going to take a while tho.. cutting out all the bricks & sticking them isn't the funnest of jobs.. lol. Anyway here it is.

Some bricks will be displaced or broken, but the mud will make the side uneven so theres no need to cut them irregular etc...
