Well is it? Is it as easy to beat as in SBG? Can the enemy just cast a few spells, have it trample all my men, and fall off the board?

Aren't you the person who was complaining about how hard it was to beat Harad in another thread?

i beat one really easily with legolas and three companies of galadhrim archers. crippling shot reduced its resilience, followed by an epic shot (which i rolled a 6 for). the other elves finished it off.

but saying that, it did eat my knights...

The Mumak can be very good, and I would say that it is better in WOTR than in SBG. However, it also has its weaknesses, of which Legolas is its greatest. It can also still trample your own troops in WOTR.

My advise is to play a few games with it and see if you like it. If you want to be super nasty take two Mumaks.

To be most effective, what you need to do is get you Mumak to finish its move on top of a formation that can't fall back (for whatever reason). Because they can't fall back, any companies even partially under the Mumak get destroyed.

The Mumak is so fun in SBG...

Can Epic Heroes join the Mumak's crew?

Ok, I was gonna say that it would be pretty over the top if they could... Hell, even just a Nazgul on it would have los to so much more.

I fought against a battlehost formation containing four of them. I made pretty short work of them with my bolt throwers, combined with my six Trolls that made up my Black legion battlehost.

However, one did get through and managed to be on one of my orc units. It wiped the unit down to one compnay from four, so I guess it matters what "quality" you face.

some say you can set them on the top, some say you can't.
if the GW would be more clear about it, it would be very nice(I think its not inbosseble a nazgul can go on a mumak)

I don't have my rulebook with me at the moment, so I can't give a quote, but the rules do clearly say that Epic Heroes can't join a monster formation.

From my experience with and against them, terrain and large friendly Formations can be your biggest challenges with the Mumuk in WotR. If you can get your Mumuk into combat with other Formations (both the Trample and stopping on top of the enemy Formation are great ways of getting early damage) then they can be pretty effective. But it's getting them there that can prove the challenge. The random movement range is a real PITA for me as it only takes a couple turns of short move to mess up a lot of your plans.

We had a game a month or so ago where we had a couple on the table and they proved more of a dud than anything else, but most of those issues were related to bad move rolls and limited movement options early on with terrain. http://tac-me.net/index.php/component/content/article/86-lotr-battlereports/lotr-battlereports-wotr/80

As noted by others it's pretty easy to take them out if your army is tailored for it. As my only significant Good army in WotR is centered around my Wood Elves I almost always have Legolas and Thranduil and can roll disgusting numbers of bow shots so I don't worry too much about them with that army. But when I've played them against some of our other locals they can be fun and worth their points as long as things go well. I did have a case where I blew my Courage test far earlier in the game than you should expect and my Mumuk charged into some terrain and was eliminated right off. I also find that my random stamped rolls almost always go right at one of my top two Formations and never into my opponent's Formations. I find the best option is to just blast it forward to break enemy front lines and make it easier for your real troops to leverage the weaknesses created, and then try to get it in among the enemy tight enough where almost any random direction has a chance of hurting them. And then just let it do what it can until it dies.

Our group has enough Mumuks among us (four or five) to try out the War Mumuk BattleHost and I hope to give that a go sometime in the Fall or early Winter. I think that will be really fun and dramatic, though I'm not sure what anyone would want to put against them.

by far I enjoy that model out of all of them, and I dont have one, my opponent does, and it is a blast to see what happens.

Especially when it panics. :)

but regardless it is a fun model to battle against and with.

first, it would be much better if he could have the shadow lord atop, but i would use a mumak by first disordering a formation, casting some anti-courage spells on it and let the mumak move on it :D
