hey all, just a quick question.

I really don't feel like paying the $15 for the GW primer, and i was wondering if anybody uses a different, inexpensive, and just as good primer!

also, i live in the U.S. so if you American guys can tell me to go and get this stuff, like at Target, or Wal-mart, places like that..

I just went with the GW. You can get acrylic spray cheap on ebay but if you end up buying one and its no good you'll end up spending a lot more than $15 before you find a good one.

I'm a big cheapo and I hate buying stuff at full price. But the GW spray is very good quality and its massive!
$15 isnt that much when think about how far it goes. Your going to be spending like $300+ on models, brushes and paints before you need to spend another $15 on spray.

I just noticed that this is the terrain forum... so you can just about ignore my last post. If its for terrain then just go on ebay and get the cheapest acrylic spray you can find.

I have seen people priming terrain with brush on black primer rather than spray as its a lot cheaper.

For priming, I use the cheapest matte black spray paint I can find.
Don't shop in Hobby or Craft stores! The prices are always higher. Try Lowe's or Home Depot. Even Kmart and Walmart are better for this item.

no, sorry about that, i kind of put it in the wrong area, i need the primer for mini's.

I thought of getting primer other than GW's because of this video by Devstro.

OK, cheap matte back spray paint is my choice for priming minis.
You don't need high dollar stuff for priming. Just use light coats, don't try to prime in one coat. I've been using this method for... ever, and I've never had a problem. Remeber to wash plastic models with dish detergent and warm water (and dry) before you prime. It gets the mold release off.

There is no problem with using cheap primers, I have a home brand from a local hardware store myself and it works fine.

but as said before it is better to spray three thin coats than one big one.

I personaly go into my local art shop and buy the biggest chapest pot of acrylic matt black i can find and then put it through my airbrush waterd down about 70/30.

Its different for my historical stuff which all gets primed a medium grey.

how do you water down the primer??

I use Tamiya paints in my Iwata airbrush. Which is pricier than spray cans. I ma also into armour modeling, and most guys there use either Tamiya primer - which is more expensive than GW but better, or aurto primer. The auto paint apparently works well if you DO NOT get the dula purpose filler-paint spray, meant to fill small scratches. Not so good for models.

In the Uk ....
I walk into Halfords and pick up a can of black spray primer.

This is the stuff they use on cars - competitively priced, does both metal and plastic minis, very fine spray, excellent coverage. I think a large can is around £7.

A great option if you don't have any modelling shops handy.

Oh and I get my superglue from the Wickes shop next door to the Halfords !
Good size dropper bottle and it's cheap !

I was just wondering if you can get this armory primer at a large hardware store, like Home Depot, or Lowe's or even Wal-mart, Target, or any other large store like these.

I would rather go and buy them than buy it off of the internet.

so if anybody knows if you can get this product at these store listed, that would be great!

No none of these stores carry it. That is why so many people suggested something else. GW and armory don't make paint. They buy it from someone else put their name on it and mark it up and resells it. GW adds in a 65% tax rate and a vat tax too so $15.00 for a $3 can of paint.

Wal-mart, has it's own brand. I like it better than Lowe's brand. But a $3 name brand is better than both. Just avoid sand able-primer. They put sand-able primer in the auto department so it should not be a problem.
