My suggestion for getting a Dwarf Army started is to Buy the following:

Balin's Guard box set
2 Dwarf warrior box sets.

If you convert one of the warriors to a banner then you could create an army list similar to this:

1 Balin, Durin's axe

1 Dwarf warrior, banner
8 Khazard Guard
13 Dwarf warrior, Dwarf bow
10 Dwarf warrior, Sheild
9 Dwarf warrior, two-handed weapon.
500 points, 41 warriors 1 hero.

To expand the army (or to include more variety) you could then buy:

Iron Guard and Dwarf rangers.

At 500 points that is really all you need IMHO.

looks good 2 me but u need mislie troops, only a ballista (to pin down the enemy and monipulate the enemy)

what if you were against a load of camping elven archers with bows ?
but with a ballista you could loosen their formation and kill mavy half a dozen elves before they even start to fire

D6 helps alot against camping elves, and a few shots can take out the ballista crew... making it usless - so it can go either way
i would get another hero, or even better, iron guard - these guys are are simply brilliant

Antlion's list is the best to use if you are starting dwarfs you can always expand it with other troops but this is the core and the best list to use.

Antlion summed it up pretty well. Once you have the three box's he suggested I'd say get a captain/banner blister, 2 iron guard blisters, and gimli. You also might want to look into the new releases both for the dwarves and goblins coming out soon.

I agree, a ballista is nearly always useless. Iron Guard are good, and a banner is also essential. Do you plan on going for Khazad-dum or Erebor?

D6 is short for Defence six.
At most tournaments players only enter 1 army. This means that a player with a Dwarf army may end up playing against a player with an Elf army.

I agree.

@General Elessar, a Ballista isn't too venerable from shooting if you add 1 or 2 extra crew. In my experience it doesn't tend to take back its points cost though. At 500 points I wouldn't recommend it.

sauraman, do you have the Legions of Middle Earth rule book? It dictates the units that an army list can be take. For Dwarfs this means that the Dwarfs of Khazardum in the second age can't fight with those in the third age (Erebor). However you could still reasonably do an Erebor list, to fight against goblins in Khazardum.

If you're going for Khazad-dum, I would probably start with a box or 2 of dwarf warriors, a command blister, and some Khazad Guard followed by iron guard and the Durin and Mardin blister. I think it would be harder to start off a Khazad-dum list than an Erebor list but it's very easy to do both.

It's very easy to switch between khazadum and erebor armys, the only differences are heroes and vault wardens. I prefer Erebor's heroes myself, but I think that both Erebor and Khazadum are viable to start with. 8) Though Erebor has a slight edge in my mind as it has two really good cheap heroes (gimli, balin) whereas KD only has mardin who is only really useful if there's trolls.

Like theavenger001 said, you don't have to be too strict about focusing on just Erebor or Khazad-dum, you could easily collect both.

Vault Wardens are in the khazad-dum list but not in the Erebor. But the ballista is in both.
