Hi, I am curious as to how people use the different warg cavalry options available to mordor armies.

For example with Warg Riders are throwing spears ever worth the points and are shields a practical investment?

When should Orc Trackers on Warg be taken and are they effective or is the defence 3 too much of an issue?

Do people use Warg Cavalry in a counter-attack or assault role?

I guess I am looking for some general feedback on the cavalry tactics and equipment selections that people have found to be useful.

Thanks in advance.

Shields are great against S2 bows, but do nothing against S3 bows and most warriors. Throwing spears...meh. I've won a few games because of lucky dice with warg throwing spears, but on the whole they almost never cause a wound. Trackers could be useful if you want a fast cheap squad to harass with. But usually I just prefer 6 WR w/shield + Sharku to harass a flank. I take shields because it's more important to arrive intact.

Mounted Trackers are ace. Cav archers are great, period, but Trackers actually hit just as hard as regular warg riders.

Most cavalry in SBG are best used as counter-assault, and that's another reason why Trackers are superior. They can shoot while you're waiting for the line to engage.

Mostly I have 2 packs of 5 wargs both with a captain on warg. One is made of trackers on warg running to the flanks and shooting at spellcasters and other nasty stuff behind the lines. The other group I use to kill enemy archers or disturb them.

Trackers on wargs? I've never tried that before. I though 4+ to kill would be too low for something that costs 11 points. I find warg riders work best in small groups of about 4-6 with a captain on a warg. I always use them as skirmishers to take out isolated warriors and nearby archers. Basically, keep them hugging terrain until you need them then burst out and take the enemy at the rear or flank when your main battlelines clash (this is the only time I would charge the main contingent of the enemy force with WR.) Warg riders have worked wonders for me this way.
