Can Legolas, if paired with at least 9 other elves firing bows, volley fire but use his auto-hit instead of firing three times? It would mean 9 shots to hit on a 6 (from other elves) and one auto-hit at 48 inches.

Seeing as the volley fire rules state that a model hits only on a 6, regardless of Shoot Value, it would seem that the main emphasis on this is that shoot value is lowered. Legolas normally would be able to fire 3 times with a hit on a 6 for volley fire. However, his special rule gives him the ability to automatically make a hit instead of firing 3 times. Since this is completely independent of Shoot Value (and presumably then the volley restrictions), it would make sense that it would overrule the volley fire rule and Legolas could auto-hit even in volley fire.

Is this correct?

Thanks

Legolas's auto-hit (and I believe his three-shot special rule) is for direct-fire. Volley fire is a separate way of shooting (where you often don't even see your target but rather just put a bunch of arrows in the air at a reasonable angle and hope they come down someplace useful).

I'd have to go back and see if I can find official word on if Legolas contributes 3 or just 1 shot to a volley team, but I'm pretty sure the auto-hit is not applicable.

TBH though, as a major Elf player in SBG myself (and with a pretty large table at the store) I don't often find my pointy-eared models having more than one turn to volley anyway before their enemy is in direct fire range. Not many forces would want to stay back and expose themselves to volley fire for long under most conditions.

Legolas only contributes one dice because the rule says: Roll one dice for each ... (probably "model in the firing group"). It doesen't say: Everyone shoots.

That's what I have been thinking. We never played where Leggy added more than one die to volley and it was still part of the random roll but I just couldn't remember the exact wording of the rule.

There is no correct answer for this question, I've seen it ruled all ways at the GT depending on what ref you ask.
