Great project, but alot of work, I've been working on a dwarven outpost for some time now. I'll try to get some pictures of it uploaded onto here for some insperation for you.
Do you know what type of fortress you wish to construct? Underground, or above more specifically.

This is a photo of the Moria terrain I made from the Fellowship of the Ring source book plan. I would recommend making lots of small terrain pieces to make a larger whole.

What I'm going for is like have it build into a mountain above ground. The Moria piece looks really good though so stuff like is good for inspiration.

Great terrain guys, here's a WIP of my Moria on OR, here's the link:
viewtopic.php?f=50&t=19749&start=40
I know it's not finished yet, but maybe it could give you some ideas, at page 3 there you can see my quick draw of the board, at further pages you can see some thing I'm working on, none are finished yet.. :( oh well.. good luck with your board! be sure to show us some pics! ;)

Thanks everyone.
@ old chestnut- Yeah that looks great it comes in well with what I'm thinking.

@ Jeremiah- I've seen some GF9 stuff before and that is almost exactly what I had in mind.

@ Eaothen- Nice Moria stuff. I really like doorways. The guide to make them is great.

I'm glad you like it, hopefully the doorways are effective for you if you're planning on creating some ;)
The doors are made like those of the plastic moria kit, if you want them to fit for a troll or something just do the same but use larger messurements etc.
One thing for inspiration btw could be playing games, it always give me lots of things to think about how to create my own!

some games of LOTR that have been usefull for me for Moria:
- The battle for Middle-Earth (1)
- LOTR Conquest
- LOTR The Third Age

the last one gives the best inspiration if you ask me, you can freely walk through Moria as much as you want, it's much larger than the others!
If you're searching for a fortress instead of something underground like Moria I'd say play battle for Middle-Earth 2, the Erebor map, and make sure you start in Erebor instead of on the edge of Dale, so you can look through the mountain freely ;)

Good luck!

i think personally the fort should be built into a mountain as helms deep is liked by the dwarves so maybe something similar to it possibly :)

yeah maybe watchtowers on either side of the entrance like watchtowers and lots of chambers like guardrooms and such as they have in moria :)

Hi aD.

How did you go with this project?

Here's a LINK to my version of the entry gate of Erebor.

Hope it's helpful in some way.

I've sold this now and one day I plan to have another go and get a lot more detail into it.

Cheers,
Steve.
