I did not think so, until I read this:

"Mounts which are also Heroes (such as Gwaihir), may of course continue to fight as normal if they survive the Trample." (MoM pg 53)

Can anyone explain this?

I think that was poor wording on GW's part. It sucks that eagles dont have knock down or extra attack, you'd think a flying eagle would knock you over if you flew into you.

I don't have my rulebook here, but in the old rules Gandalf and Radagast could mount. Gwaihir.

I don't think they were able to 'mount' Gwaihir as such, giving the eagle an extra attack and knockdown.. Rather Gwaihir was able to carry them as passengers, just like Arwen and Frodo or Eowyn and Merry any other cavalry model.

This is in relation to the original rules that were changed, unfortunately they did't update the profiles as well.

I had hoped that when they came out with the new Free Peoples book they would have given some changes to the Eagles to either include the ability to carry passengers (possibly a game breaker since they could carry a couple key models quickly to an objective or strategic location for example). But giving them some additional hitting power either with basic knock-down or (preferably) a special rule similar to the Spider Queens "like a Monstrous Mount" would have been nice. Especially for Gwaihir.

hopefully with the eagles involvement in the BoTFA will mean someone will look over the rules and decide they need to change them, they will likely play test the scenario and someone will notice they are a bit lackluster and change them :)

Since the Eagles are deux ex machina, you'd expect them to be overpowered not underpowered but there you go. You could be right about the changes, but they cpuld intead make them even weaker.
