When the average size of a goblin is ~5 feet, having one be ~8 feet tall is rather unlikely.

Unlikely or not, the Great Goblin has been depicted in art as a gigantic being.

Example 1

Example 2

Example 3

Example 4

Maybe they choose their leaders not based on intelligence, but rather based on size and intimidation. And even though the average height of a goblin may be 5', anomalies can occur. So I don't have a problem that they have Conan Stevens (a.k.a. The Mountain) playing as the Goblin King.

Are those depictions from artists working for the movie or depictions of him throughout the years? :pippin:

In some of those, he isn't actually that much bigger then the gobbo's around him (no. 4 in particular), but I see the point.

I suppose those are from all sorts of sources, Constantine, but I'm not sure.

#1 is from John Howe and #4 from Alan Lee, but from before they were hired to Jackson's movies.

"A tremendous goblin with a huge head" is the only description Tolkien gave of the Great Goblin, that and the fact that Beorn thought killing him was a great deed, gives plenty of space for artistic licence.

Yes but the great goblin is an unlikely creature, that's why he is the leader.

I was thinking he should be ~6 and half feet tall, that way he's still much larger than other goblins but not the size of a troll.

I just thought "Great" was meant like our "Alfred the Great", not to describe someone physically large, but a mighty ruler. That was stated to be large would be like someone among humans whose 5-6 inch taller then average, you still go like "Wow, he's big" but it's not like he's twice the size of the others.

Some people seem to be confused with who's who. Conan Stevens is playing Bolg, who leads the Goblins in the Battle of Five Armies and looks almost like an Isengard Uruk (albeit paler.) The Great Goblin was the leader of Goblin Town and is run through by Gandalf with Glamdring in the book. Last I hear, Barry "Dame Edna" Humphries was playing (or at least voicing) that character.

I wasn't referring to you re: the confusion. I don't know why I misremembered the GG's death

"Suddenly a sword flashed in its own light. Bilbo saw it go right through the Great Goblin as he stood dumbfounded in the middle of his rage. He fell dead, and the goblin soldiers fled before the sword shrieking into the darkness."

So it could be either.
