My local GW says most likely 1st December as the only other 2 planned releases soon, are on 40k day, and in February.

Yep, Dec 1 is the day. With the white dwarf coming out a week (?) before that with all the pre-orders. We should start seeing pictures in ~ 2 weeks.

I was in my local GW yesterday and the manager was hinting that there wouldn't be a new starter box set until feb. he said there was a good chance of new minis but not to get excited about the new set yet.

What the... that's so contradictive to the rumors we heard last couple of days. Let's hope he's fooling around... or wrong.

Only reason I'm slightly inclined to believe him is the fact he was at a mangers meeting dicussing all the new stuff. And it was publicly known it was a hobbit themed managers meeting. Soon find out though wont we.

There is bound to be a Boxed set of The Hobbit on the 1st December, would GW miss the Christmas market? i doubt it.

Yeah, I think they would want to coincide it with Christmas.

Well, in all honesty it is a probability. There could be a boxed set, say in line with one of the adventure sets of the earlier "debunked" leak. Meaning no small rulebook in the box. We will probably get a new rulebook, just no mini rulebook until an actual starter box is released.

There were a great many adventure style sets released during the FoTR i.e. weathertop, breaking of the fellowship, the amon hen one etc. No reason to think The Hobbit would be any different.

They have already missed the X mas market in the US. Black Friday ( the day after Thanks Giving) is the largest retail sales day in the US. If it is not on the store self by then it won't be on the shelf for Christmas. I will be able to order it.

I do not know, but if they do make changes they can not be very big. Because of the new source books released earlier in the year. That does not mean that there will be no changes, just look at the scenario changes. None of the stats changed, so they could change other things, like change the phases in the game to be similar to WoTR, multiple spells per turn( FAQ on the compel anyone?) remove volley, the list goes on and on. Most likely there will be little change because big changes would alienate those who stuck with the system.
In the end I am not that worried about it, it will be what it will be. If I don't like it I will play the old rules.

The only reason it's such a big retail day is because of the nationwide sales. Seeing as GW products don't appear in major retail stores, I doubt they care that much about Black Friday.

Agreed. Even if iPods and the like are selling for 60% off, GW wouldn't knock a penny off their stuff. It's a non-issue for them.

I doubt they would offer a discount. But I think the rules will be updated, rather than have be replaced.
