Hi all. So, I'm in need of an army list for the weekend and I've been throwing a few ideas around. Its been years since I've played a proper game and as a result have never played by or made a list for warband rules, so please point out any faults and shout out if it can be optimised.

For the moment I don't know which scenarios will be played or who I'll be facing, just that I'm only allowed one army for the day-long event and therefore has to be ready for anything.

So without further ado:

Warband 1: 167
Faramir/heavy armour and shield
2 Osgiliath Veterans/shield
2 Osgiliath Veterans/spears
3 Warriors of Minas Tirith/shield
3 Warriors of Minas Tirith/spear and shield

Warband 2: 98
Denethor
4 Warriors of Minas Tirith/shield
4 Warriors of Minas Tirith/spear and shield

Warband 3: 110
Beregond
5 Warriors of Minas Tirith/shield
5 Warriors of Minas Tirith/spear and shield

Warband 4: 121
Damrod
7 Rangers
5 Rangers/spear

Total: 44
Might: 5
Bows: 12

I'm a little concerned that Might might () be a bit thinly spread. I'd considered taking Pippin instead of Denethor, but I'm a glutton for theme.

Would it be wise to make room for a banner anywhere?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You will need a banner for Victory Conditions depending on the scenario. Plus they are useful in combat for re-rolls.

Agreed banners are very useful , I always try and take one . Your list looks pretty good , I not sure though if your WOMT need both a sheild and spear. Usual I give them just one of the above and then form a sheild wall. This is an army I find effective

Denethor
6x WOMT (s).
6x WOMT (sp).

Damrod.
12 x ROG (7spears)

Beregond.
6x WOMT (s).
6x WOMT (sp).

Forlong the fat.
5x axe men.
Banner.

500 points. 45 men
I know forlong isn't really in keeping with your theme but a few two handers in an army are always a bonus, just remember to pair them up with a WOMT it will give you a better chance of winning the fight. Also forlongs fight is great. You could always swap forlong for faramir with shield and swap the axe men for 3 osgliath vets with shields , that would leave you with 2 spare points to buy spears for your rangers.

Removing the shield from all those WoMT would take a lot of converting.

I like the original list, although I'd sprinkle in a few more elites, like Fountain Guard with shields.

Yes denethor is a good choice , good fight value two attacks nice courage and very cheap, its rare he's going to fail his courage test.
Hi whafrog I think I didn't explain correct with my first comment , I mean you don't need to pay points for all your men to have a spears ,forget the shield bit , sorry about that and also sorry that I keep spelling shield wrong!!!, That comment was made way too early in the morning :E
Yes Gotfc are very good and also citadel guards , they've both got the body guard rule which is great. The list is good I'm just not sure about the vets though .

Denethor is fine, especially if you don't have any wraiths around. If you're unlucky enough to roll snake-eyes on his Courage test, if it's early in the game it might be worth it to ignore it and let it play out for a turn. Against someone who has a wraith and knows how to use it, then he could be more trouble than he's worth, but they'd have to focus on him to sap his will and drain his courage, and meanwhile Faramir is running around creating mayhem.

First of all, thanks to everyone who's offered advice and tips. I really appreciate it.

Whafrog and D0Cdeath: One of my other concerns whilst creating the list was the lack of elites. Trouble is I have no Guard of the Fountain Court and only a handful of Citadel Guard and can't get any more before the game. They'll definitely be included in the future though.

ManHell: Whilst Denethor's special rule could be a bit of a liability, it seems to me as though the chances of him failing are a little overrated, and it also looks like he'd be able to hold his own if need be. One downside to him that sticks out to me is his lack of might. But is that not as much an issue as I'm led to believe?

D0Cdeath: Why are you unsure about the vets? Not meaning to sound awkward or anything, I just thought with Faramir around they might be pretty decent to have.

The vets will fill the void left be the aforementioned gondor elites. At 500pts, you are unlikey to come up against any decent wraith and if you do, they will be low on troops, so Denethor should be fine. Gondor do lack mid range heros other than Faramir so keep him safe and make best use of heroic strike to kill anyone who may attempt to kill him.

Hi KnightyKnight , as a figure I think the osgliath vets look great , i even have a few painted up , their courage is also very good . But they cost the same as a citadel guard who have a better fight and also the bodyguard special rule . I not sure to be honest if their worth taking or not maybe I'm wrong, why do you like them over WOMT?. ( apart from the theme aspect).

I guess you're right about the Bodyguard rule D0C (which on a related note, I've always believed Osgil Vets should've had). By sticking them close to Faramir they'll have the same Fight value as a Citadel Guard, so I'm not too worried about that aspect. Aside from that I guess it simply is personal preference, both in thematic and appearance terms. Again, I'm not saying you're wrong by any means, just curious to hear people's opinions and reasons :)

Cavalry are a valid option ManHell, but I'm wary of how they'd cut into my numbers. I know they're capable of packing quite a punch. If it was 650-750 points I'd have thrown them in, but for 500 I think I may be best without.

Many thanks for the updated list Southy 8)

Also, I have some Guard of the Fountain Court on order. Would it be a good idea to take out the warriors in Denethor's warband and replace them with the guard?

Osgiliath Veterans, crucially when facing Orcs and Evil Men, have access to shields. This makes them much tougher against the aformentioned opponents.

I'd definitely take GotFC with Denethor, it's not only well-themed but they can also take his hits better if he goes nutty.

Just a quick update.

Due to the rules of the tournament I'm not allowed to proxy models, not for heroes anyway. So rather begrudgingly I've had to tweak the list to:

Warband 1: 184
Faramir/heavy armour and shield
4 Osgiliath Veterans/shield
4 Warriors of Minas Tirith/spear and shield
1 Warrior of Minas Tirith/banner

Warband 2: 89
Denethor
4 Warriors of Minas Tirith/shield
3 Warriors of Minas Tirith/spear and shield

Warband 3: 93
Beregond
4 Warriors of Minas Tirith/shield
4 Warriors of Minas Tirith/spear and shield

Warband 4: 130
Captain of Minas Tirith/shield
6 Rangers of Gondor
3 Rangers of Gondor/spear

However, I've also planned out the version that I'd like to use in future.

Warband 1: 193
Faramir/heavy armour and shield
4 Osgiliath Veterans/shield
5 Warriors of Minas Tirith/spear and shield
1 Warrior of Minas Tirith/banner

Warband 2: 104
Denethor
4 Guard of the Fountain Court/shield
3 Guard of the Fountain Court

Warband 3: 110
Beregond
5 Warriors of Minas Tirith/shield
5 Warriors of Minas Tirith/spear and shield

Warband 4: 95
Damrod
6 Rangers of Gondor
3 Rangers of Gondor/spear

Thanks again for all the help everyone.

So the army faced its first challenge today, and won three out of four rounds! Victory for Gondor!

A big thanks again to everyone who helped out. Couldn't have done it without you guys :)

Round 1: Lords of Battle. Dwarves led by Dwalin, Gimil and Balin.

Round 2: Reconnitoire. Moria. Led by a dragon.

Round 3: To the Death! Gondor with a handful of Galadhim.

Round 4: Domination. Same as round 1. This was the game I lost.

Overall I was pretty happy with the force. Quite versatile, but the big issue being a lack of elites. Hopefully the final list with Damrod and Guard of the Fountain Court will fix a few problems. At higher points I'd definitely throw in some cavalry to deal a few bigger punches.
