So a staff member at GW and I have set each other a challenge: build and fully paint a 1000 point army for WotR by x date we haven't set yet for a battle. He is running either Dwarves or Gondor or both, and I am running Misty Mountains currently, but may be convinced otherwise... though I do love my goblins.

Here is a preliminary list working with the book. Suggestions and ideas away! Ideally want the list sorted before going out and buying silly numbers of models...

Druzhag
5 Companies of Goblins with Shaman and Drums
3 Companies of Wild Wargs with Chieftain
3 Companies of Giant Spiders
1 Company of Bats
Cave Troll
Cave Troll
Dwimmerlaik/Tainted(undecided) on Fell Beast

Whaddya reckon?

I don't know enough about the Misty Mountains, but I know that with the official rules Cave Trolls are not worth it.
There is a topic in this forum were the factions and their units are discussed and evaluated, but unfortunately the Misty Mountains troops are not assessed.

Leave the shaman, bring something else. Mainly because in my experience shamans in WotR have been a combination waste of points and an opportunity for someone to heroic duel/ epic strike a quarter or more of your formation into the ground.

i always put shamans in my goblin formations. fireball/ shatter shields etc comes in very handy. I would upgrade each formation to 9 companies if possible and stick Khamul in one of them  if you are feeling really mean, add in the betrayer aswell.

Can't do that with 1000 points. Formations are as they are exactly 1000 points, and I can't get more than 250 points worth of wraiths as has to be 25%.

Unless I move to a Mordor army with the
5 Companies of Goblins with Shaman and Drums
as an allied bit, then have more wraiths?

I could have:
5 Companies of Goblins with Shaman and Drums
Tainted on Fellbeast
Dwimmerlaik on Fellbeast
Khamul
The Betrayer

Again, 1000 points exactly... and a load of wraiths but not many models overall...

Wouldn't do the Mordor alliance- could turn out messy if they smash the goblins on the ground (which is the first thing I would do).

How about this then: just a new play about.

Druzhag
Durburz
Khamul the Easterling
The Betrayer
8companies Goblins with Bows- Shaman, Drums
8companies Wargs- chieftain

Deploy Druzhag with the Wargs, and Khamul, Undying and Durburz with the Goblins. Leaves me with 5 points to spare, but don't see what I could spend those on.

Whaddya reckon?

I would put druzhag with the archers also. He has access to guide arrows which can potentially make your archers better.

Best is to stick Kamul in your archer formation so he can deflect them in necessary. Then the betrayer in your goblin formation who's going to do the fighting so you can reroll 1&2.

Why would you want to use a fell beast? They're not that great on the battlefield.. especially the 500p if you want to have 2 of them

I just really like the model... Might save them for LotR though.

At the moment I have 8 goblin companies with Bows, so put Khamul in there; then put the Betrayer on horseback with the Wargs for close-combat?

So in terms of deployment:

Moria Goblin Archers (8 Companies) - Drum, Shaman, Khamul, Durburz
Wild Wargs (8 Companies) - Chieftain, Betrayer, Druzhag

How does that sound? It doesn't give me any big beasties, but might be able simply to swarm them with Goblins and Wargs... or should I shrink the formations slightly to fit in a Cave Drake or something?

Also- question about Epic Hero deployment- it says you can't have more Epic Heroes than 'normal' warriors in a company, does this include the ones it 'replaces', essentially the rule being you can't 'replace' an upgraded character, or does it mean you need twice as many normal models as upgrades, so that on the tray at any one time there are at least as many normals as Heroes? Meaning cavalry units can't have both a captain and Hero on one base? And for the rule it says Epic Heroes have to die before

For example- which of these would be legal/advised (E=Epic Hero, U=Upgraded, N=Normal)

1: presumably fine, plenty of 'normals'.
NNNN
UEEU

2: fine, but would mean a Hero would have to die before the normals?
UNNN
UEEE

3: A no-no? Or ok because there are three normals 'underneath' the Epics?
UNUU
UEEE

Also- final silly question- Goblin Drum. Is this only one model? Other drummers are one upgrade to one model, presumably this is too in spite of the LotR three-model drum (drum and two drummers) or blackshield drummers (drum holder and drummer)?

OH- and Blackshields look awesome... Might be worth me abandoning something for a unit of those? Maybe ignore the Beast element and take a unit of Blackshields?

Blackshields: 8 companies, Captain, Durburz, Drum, Betrayer
Moria Goblin Bowmen: 8 companies, Shaman, Khamul, Druzhag

8c formations are hard to move even with Wings of Terror. Seems to be up in the air so I'll lend what I've faced and was like 'what the hell is this'.

In my opinion, Misty Mountains with allies is the most powerful faction in the game so I wouldn't worry too much about making the perfect list unless you want your buddy to not call you again. Just get what models you like to paint and make an army.

Loading up on ruin casters. Druzag, Kardush and 2 Shamans is awesome. Add a shade or two and damn. You can even get Captains to duel useless Epic Strike hero's.
A Dragon. They just look awesome and are fun to play. You can get more firepower for the points but I think every Misty Mountain player should have one. Win or lose, it will be a good time.

What if I want the perfect army? :P

Yeah, I love the Dragon... but I don't think I could justify it in a 1000pt game, even without the spellcaster. Would you say for 1000pt ally list, getting two wraiths or a wraith and a shade is better having? Just weighing up options.

Two wraiths is better.

So-

Khamul
Betrayer
Durburz
Druzhag

And then either:
5companiesWargs+Chieftain
5companiesBowmen+Shaman+Khamul
5companiesBlackshields+Captain+Drum

or:
8companiesBowmen+Shaman+Khamul
1companyGoblin Warriors
9companiesBlackshields+Captain+Drum

Which do you guys like more? Swarms or variety...

I think the first list is better, but you have too little troops in both lists. I would drop the Captains, Shamans and Drum for more bodies.

Really? Drums at the least seem completely worth it, and without the Shaman I have less magic available. I'm still worried that in this list I have no monsters. Really, more bodies over command upgrades?

Telcar iss right. But you should at least get a goblin shaman for the ruin spells.. captain and drum don't really seem necessary if you keep durburz in the black shield formation he gives them plenty of courage and your goblins can already move like 8 inch which is enough.

Drums are rather moot on goblins with Nazgul (ie Wings of Terror), banners are moot anyway, and a taskmaster isn't very handy either.

As for magic, you have the three most potent magicans (for their points) in the game in your list, you'd that should be enough :P
