I am starting a Dwarf army to coincide with the release of the Grimhammers and Thorins' company but am really stuck for ideas as I have never played against or with a Dwarf force! If anyone has an example of a themed or non-themed list that they wouldn't mind posting, I would be very grateful!

Well, i really like Thorin's company. It is well worth taking 3 warbands of erebor dwarfs, each led by Dwalin, Thorin, and Balin, and then taking some of the 'support' dwarves such as Ori, Oin, and Bombur as their own warband to keep your 'brawlers' alive. Since dwarf warriors have high defence across the board (and now that they have spears) they can keep themselves alive while your heroes sort out the real beef on the other team.

The grimhammers are totally not worth it: throwing weapons have been nurfed and two handed weapons have always been useless.

but here's a quite competitive list:
warband 1:
-thorin
-6 erebor warriors w/ shield
-6 erebor warriors w/ spear

warband 2:
-balin on pony
-6 EW's w/ shield
-6 EW's w/ spear

warband 3:
-captain of Erebor w/ shield
-6 EW's w/ shield
-6 EW's w/ spear

warband 4:
-saruman w/ horse

Thanks! Do you think that magical support works well with dwarves or should I not bother? Are khazad guard any good?

Khazad Guards are good in a normal dwarf list, and your base troops in a list without any ordinary warriors.

Dwarf models are a tad too expensive to take magic alongside them. However if you want to, i'd recommend radagast, since he can A:Heal your heroes, B: Can negate cavalry, a long standing crux of the dwarves, and C: Can lead eagles once your playing big games, cos monsters are always good.

Also as i stated above, Oin, Ori, and Bombur can do all the defensive jobs a wixard does, cost a little less, and are slightly more effective at the healing lark. I woul recomend them first as a heal squad then move onto a wizard if need be :)

I just wonder. When people keep suggesting balin in these threads. Are you using the other (old but still legal) profile. And also, i don't think heroes from thorins company can lead warbands as they are their own army.

Edit: Sorry, you are probably using Thorin, Balin and Dwalin from Army of Thror. My bad.

There are no archers in the list

You'll be venerable to Uruks or any other crossbowmen

Great! Thanks everyone, this is helping! Could I ally in a warband of non-erebor dwarves with bows as ranged support, or even elves? Do you think that Thorin's company will ever be released as a separate box set, or those dwarves sold as individual models? If not, any idea where I can pick up the good side from escape from goblin town?

There was a guy on ebay who sold them all for £13.99 but i think he has stopped, sorry man :( Someone else might start it, although i highly recommend the starter anyway :) If not, GW will probably do a finecast Thorins company.

Cheers guys :) I managed to find it on eBay for £25! I'll probably get that and two boxes of 12 dwarf warriors plus I already have Gimli. Do you think that'll start me off? This has been really helpful, thanks to all of you. I will post progress on this project in the work in progress forum! :)

Keep in mind that Thror's Army and Durin's Folk at two different factions so you will only be able to field 1/3 bowmen for only the Durin's Folk, not for the overall army count. For example, using the army posted previously, if you add in a warband with Gimli leading 12 Dwarf Warriors you will only be able to have a total of 4 bows despite the fact that you have a total of 48 Models for the entire army.

If you don't mind changing the theme, you could ally in the Grey Company

Grey company are great allies for any army but the idea of Arathorn and Throrin working together isn't actually that farfetched :)

Except that arathorn died when aragorn was a baby, and other people are saying that aragorn was twenty at the time of the hobbit, so arathorn would be dead.

An army lead by aragorn and halbarad would work though.

No no no, Thorin is almost 200 years old by the time of the hobbit and did partake in some travelling prior to the events of book, so the two of them could well have crossed paths. Halbarad on the other hand died in 3019, 78 years after the death of Thorin, so in terms of thematics (which is what you called me out on) Halbarad would not work as a logical ally.

Another bonus of choosing non erebor dwarves is that if you ally in grey company, they can give you spears AND bows, alongside the bows your dwarves will already have. In most other situations, and given the fact that bowfire isn't a very dwarvish tactic, i probably prefer the erebor dwarves as spears are just too handy to pass up.

Thanks for all the replies! I already have Aragorn and 24 rangers so I could ally in the grey company! (Or erebor dwarves with spears) Should I bother with any cavalry warbands or should I just keep to warriors on foot in 500pt-ish games? :)
