Has anyone used Sauron on the battle table? I know he's quite costly, but after reading his rules, he looks like a beast! Great amount of attacks, great strength, great defence, plus killer magic. Has anyone had any success playing him? And what army did you field around him? x

I've used and played against him in a few Last Alliance scenarios, and both experience and hearing other people's opinions say the same thing: it can actually lead to a pretty dull game for both players. Good knows that his only chances are heroes, spear support and a whole lot'a'luck, Evil knows that if he is finally reduced to one wound it'll still take forever and a miracle to kill him if he has the Ring.

He can be fun once or twice, but becomes rather tedious quickly. In my opinion of course - I personally enjoy close-matched, "any outcome could occur" games.

The other thing to consider is whether or not he'll actually earn his points back. Sure he can kill soldiers left right and centre, but he'd have to kill a heck of a lot to amount to what you've spent on him.

Knighty is totes correct, however in an evil vs evil situation, fielding Sauron shouldn't be too bad, there are plenty of evil models who are no par with him (all of whom are infinitely more fun than Sauron to play) so the game wouldn't be so predictable. He's only worth fielding at 1500 pts imo.

The only way to have fun with Sauron is in a Last Allinance scenario because as SuicidalMarsbar and KnightyKnight pointed out its rather dull, and heroes cant really do anything to him, even treebeard and 5 ents get powned(1st hand expirience) so unless you have a last alliance scenario or a tournament in Gw dont use him, your opponent will be very very very unhappy ad most likely wont ask to play with you again.

Squish - was that a hobbit-?

I played with Sauron a couple of times, mostly against dwarves.
He can be fun, his point cost is quite high but most of the time he kills more than enough to make up for it.
With the ring it is even harder to kill him (obvious) and not as much fun to play with.

And don't forget that he is a very good sorcerer.

Sauron has a nice profile (almost invincible) but he's the Dark Lord so it's ok

Question:
Is he considered a monster or an infantry model?

Well, if you want to field suaron, then field him. He isn't un-defeatable but just make sure if you are going to field him that you play the game like the rules tell you to I.E: Make your army before you meet up to game, then set up a playing board with atleast 1/3 of it filled with terrain, THEN roll for a scenario and play it.

If you do not do this he will be overpowered, as his preferred scenario is obviously an open field with no objective besides killing him.

I would assume he is a monster, although there are many models i would like clarification on this such as:
Warg Chieftans
Giant spiders
Spider Queen
Shelob

Yeah but the great goblin is both a goblin and a monster, the trolls are both trolls and monsters, i don't see why suaron can't be a spirit and a monster (although the necromancer shouldn't be a monster) Also the MoM rulebook is outdated, i'm 99% sure that the easterling lord is asking in referrence to the new monster rules.

Why that 1% of doubt :)

Btw The question is: does he benefits the new Monster special attacks :sauron:?
Because the rulebook is not clear of who is a Monster, it only states that it is indicated in their profiles(Goblin King does not have it)

The goblin king has it - stated as monster in the big hobbit rulebook. Sauron however, is just a spirit so he cannot use the new attacks.

at the right of the name you can see what a model is
example:
golblim king [troll, monster]
when there stands monster it's a monster.
sauron doesn't follow the monster rules bus is a model of S6 or more.

Sauron i snot a monster. Wild Warg Cheiftains are not monsters either. and nor are Ginat Spiders.

Shelob and Spider Queens are, it says so in their unit entries. However Fell Beasts and Chariots are monsters even though they are not specifically listed as such.

If you fight Sauron in an evil v evil game, bring the Balrog. I've played with Moria v Mordor/Isengard, and the Balrog was able to beat the Lord of the Rings every time that I fought, averaging about 2 wounds a turn. With the new monster rules, the Balrog can Rend, meaning he wounds on a 4+ instead of a 5+.

Yeah but if Sauron has the Ring you're dead

@Azog and S.Dunedain: I don't have the new main rulebook, i was speaking about the EFGT Journey book --->the goblin king does not have monster (stupid GW)

At this point...question n.2 :P : Is the Mumak a monster?

If the Mumak is considered a monster it will be destructive.

ex: fight with an enemy model then use the Barge special attack---->your army is dead

Agreed about the Mumuk. That thing (and maybe the Great Beast...I never looked at it's details or profile) is an 'exception'. I think if the Mumuk can use the new Monster Attacks it's going to be unbalancing.
