Hi everyone welcome my work-in-progress thread.

I’ll start off with a little about me. I’ve been collecting and painting LOTR figures since about 2005, I’ve been on a bit of hiatus for the past couple of years being too busy with school during the day and work/homework at night, now that I’m graduated and fully employed I have the free time to get back into the hobby

TOWER OF ORTHANC

So I wanted to create a diorama of the Tower of Orthanc which will display the duel between Gandalf and Saruman and also the balcony with Grima and Saruman, one an exterior scene and one interior, the model will be split between two different levels the top level will have the balcony and exterior portions of the tower, the lower level will have the exterior walls removed to expose the scene within

This is my conceptual rendering of the diorama

Then I took portions to create working drawings to start to build the pieces

For the interior chamber walls first channels are cut into the foam core and profile pieces are cut out of chipboard and glued in

Texture is added with watered down woodfiller it will be painted black and a high gloss varnish will be applied

Next I created the doors with basswood, green stuff and scapebook paper

So I’ve been really busy the past few weeks and I haven’t been able to make the progress on this project that I wanted…..but I do have some new stuff to post

First a little off topic but I’m so excited to share this. At work last week our office got a new tip card for vinyl wallcovering for commercial interiors, It was a really small scale brick pattern, it looks like old bricks and it’s perfect scale for 28mm figures, so I took a sample and painted it, this will work perfect for roads or walls, I think I might buy a whole roll of it just to use for my miniatures!!!

Back to the tower.

I cut and assembled pieces for the base

For the balcony I was a little concerned about the weight so I created a wire armature and built up the base with Styrofoam, then sculpted it with milliput, I painted it and added some highlights

I added windows and doors to the walls and painted the pieces

This weekend I hope to make alot of progress on this project so I can start on the next :)
