What do you guys think about a simpler version of the in-the-way rules? Instead of rolling a 4+ every time something is in the way of an arrow, I just make it one step harder for the archer. For an example

Elf archer to hit
Normal 3+
1 thing in the way 4+
2 things in the way 5+
3 things in the way 6+
4 things in the way = cannot shoot.

What do you guys think?

Then you lose hitting what is actually in the way, which is important and great fun if it's another model.

I actually think you should roll to hit as normal and then roll your in the ways using the chart below:

1st in the way roll - 4+
2nd in the way roll -5+
3rd in the way roll - 6+
If there are 4 or more things in the way the model can't be targeted.

IMO this gives a much better idea of the likelihood of getting through multiple models as well as being streamlined and not requiring any extra book-keeping etc.

The fact that you can currently shoot past 4/5/6/7 models to hit a target just because you can see a small bit of them is ridiculous in my opinion. Granted you're unlikely to get through all those rolls but it's not rare to see banners/captains etc. wounded by shots that have miraculously passed through loads of warriors.

It's one of very few things in the ruleset that I currently dislike.

That does sound more realistic. But if you think about it statistically, you're actually getting your desired result in the current rules.

Let's say you want to shoot Gandalf who is behind 4 combats. To pass the first you have a 50% chance. But to pass the second one also you have a 25% chance. Then a 12.5% for the third, and finally a 6.25% to finally hit the wizard.

This rule is actually one of my favourites in the game. It means a single archer can change the tide of battle. And my toughest decisions as an evil player have been whether to shoot through combats or not, in the knowledge that I'm just as likely to hit my own blokes.

Its more for simplicity. If there is an actual model in the way, then you can say it hits them instead. Like:

Normal shooting: 3+
Another model in the way: 4+ (3 would hit that model)

or am i just falling into the trap of making things complicated again.

It has been a long time since I played a game.
But if I recall correctly we did something like this;
A block of warriors 3 rows deep and 5 rows wide.
A banner carrier is in the 3rd row in the back.

W W W W W
W W W W W
W W B W W

It was possible to shoot him directly (and other miniatures).
But we had to roll for in the way.
You roll to hit and if you hit you roll the in the way dice.
Every time you "hit" the arrow flies past the 1st warrior in that row,
if you "hit" again the arrow hits the banner carrier.
The moment you "miss" the in the way roll you hit the warrior that missed the roll.
