I'm a big fan of eagles, particularly with the new monster rules. Their Fight value of 7 is amongst the best in the game and puts them above most evil heroes/monsters, this makes them a great asset as you can combine them with a few of your other models, trap an enemy hero/monster and all but guarantee the win. Their high speed allows them to nip down the flanks and then start hurling models down the line. Having a high speed model that can hurl is a big advantage, I used them recently to get behind a line of Uruks and thrown their Shamen (with 5+ fury) away from the battle line, worked a treat. Terror is also incredibly useful against evil at stopping other troops counter charging them.

Not to mention the fact that the new Hobbit eagles are absolutely gorgeous models and, for GW, pretty good value.

Now if they only had 3 attacks and or counted as monstrous cavalry they'd be AMAZING.

Radagast is a good option to lead them as he can renew them as they get wounded.

That is a really good idea. As a Dwarf player I'd counter with a heroic march (or a heroic charge as I like to call it when moving into combat) but that would only be effective for that turn and any others with priority, and it would be draining my might.

Now I'll have to devise a full counter-strategy for that type of occurrence lol

The rules for Heroic March specifically say you can't use it to charge.

Aren't we meant to be talking about elves, not dwarves?

Well, the OP said one of his main opponents might be dwarves, so what a dwarf player would do to counter the elf army in question would be relevant, no?

Yeah it's all good advice. I need all the assistance I can get as elves seem to require a totally different gaming styles. I'm used to charging straight in with trolls and the like but it appears elves require more thought.

Iv got some more pieces but still not enough for a game yet. Been collecting mostly metals so far but many of them are bowmen so I'm over my limit at the min, need some spear/blades to balance things out. Still not chosen my heroes and leaders yet but will keep you up to date and see what tour thoughts are.
Thanks.

Elves require a little more subtlety and finesse, which is challenging and part of the fun, and can be extaordinarily effective. Its rarely advisable to charge straight in with them, even with Gil Galad and the Noldor, as the enemy can be severely punished with excellent archery and magic before he gets to you.

Hi,
I know I started this thread ages ago but thought an update was in order.
I have been sidetracked lately by playing a Rohan force but I finally played elves the other day!
I had three war bands of wood elves lead by thranduil, legolas, and haldir.
I upgraded my wood elf warriors to Mirkwood guard, maxed out my bow limit and equipped plenty of throwing knives and spears.
The result was epic!
The effectiveness of the ranged attacks was unbelievable. I managed to whittle down my enemy until our lines finally met. And then I realised the value of the spears special rule. Lone troops were able to shield until reinforcements could get to them.

In the end I was beaten by two points but it was a stunning debut for my elves. A few tweaks here and there and I think I will have them mastered.

Thanks for all the great tips guys!
