You are obviously a very skilled painter - lots of detail and depth in the minis, making the most of the respective sculpts. They are a wee bit brighter than most I have seen painted, and I am slightly biased as I have always imagined orcs to have very poor personal hygiene, so even when they are wearing stolen clothing, it does not stay clean for very long. The basing is excellent!

Wow. Grishnakh is amazing. Possibly your best mini so far.

The orc is a bit bright but they're quick and easy :D

I'll be cracking on with the other rank-and-file orcs when I get some free time. I'm really in the painting mood now. I just wish I had a nice hero model to paint up.

A well painted Grishnak.. maybe you could have tried for a little "dirtier" skin tone, but the detail you put into this piece is amazing once more!

Excellent job and the purple skin tone works really well.

Excellent work on Grishnakh. I quite like the purple skin tone and the monotone clothing. It really emphasizes the face as the focal point of the piece.

I'm quite happy with the colour scheme now.

Looking good. Browns, Greys etc. Are the way to go with those orcs. Took me a long time to realise

It's great painting don't get me wrong... but it's just too clean for my liking. It looks to me as if those orcs have just gone to the shops and bought those nice clean clothes brand new.

Yeah, the colours idea had been scrapped. Browns from now on :P
Cheers Gene.

Wonderful work in only a day, stunning in fact. Furthermore, I agree with the browns. They are a superior fit for Orcs.

I'll tell you what the hardest, most tedious part is Gandalf....Scraping off the mould lines.
If the miniatures came with the lines already removed I'd have had 4 times as many done :D
Thanks for the input mate. Always a pleasure.

I've nearly finished with this force now. I have 24 orcs painted, many Uruk Hai (both warriors and scouts), wargs, trolls, berserkers and heroes aplenty. All that is missing is some Wildmen of Dunland. I plan on using the Celtic Warriors from Warlord games for the Wildmen themselves but the Dunlending captains don't seem to fit right, visually, for a suitable hero to lead them so I bought this 28mm barbarian from Scibor minatures and plan on giving him the stats of an orc cpatain.

He's been twin primed and is pinned to the base so he can be detached onto a gaming base.
It's a lovely miniature and the resin used is superior to Finecast in all respects. It's stonger, not as brittle, free from defects and required minimal cleaning. it is, however a bit too chunky for a 28mm scale being the same height as a Warhammer Chaos Warrior (about 7 feet tall in scale) and just as broad so it may look a bit odd.
We'll see.

Just a quick check in on my neglected thread. I haven't painted anything LOTR/Hobbit based since Thrain The Broken so I got cracking on my Dunland champion and his scenic base.
The original tile base was scrapped as it looked odd, even for his non-gaming display base, so I've went with a good old layer of sieved soil which I'll work on later.

I've been experimenting with new techniques for eyes and came up with a pretty good way of doing them that even allows me to get a highlight in on the pupil. It involves painting them first, before any basecoats or washes and then using an unusual way of holding the brush for maximum control. The face (and beard) itself is at a basecoat+wash stage and nowhere near finished apart from the eyes.
Image

The lower half of the body (but not the base) is almost done. I'll decide what else needs doing after I've studied the picture a bit.I like to take progress photos of models as I go as that's the best way to spot mistakes or colour discrepancies before going further. And if anyone is questioning the barbarian manliness of a pink skirt then take it up with him, not me.

Oh, and contrary to what I've been saying for ages I just bought a ton more Isengard stuff from ebay....Still need to find a metal uruk-hai battering ram though.

Anyway, thanks for looking.

I saw two battering rams on eBay yesterday whilst browsing. Nice eyes. Very realistic.

Great to see you again Han, it's been too long.
So exactly how tall is this ? From your description I'm thinking about 32mm.
One thing for sure, it looks as great as all your work does, you know I'm impressed, hence you got my vote for best painter. That is, when you paint to display standard.

@UKFB Cheers mate. I'll have a look now. I've been outbid on them at the last minute about 3 times so maybe I'll just go for a 'buy it now'.
@Gandalf. Hi mate. It measures 28mm from foot to eyes so is considered 28mm scale. Height-wise it doesn't actually look too bad on his gaming base. This base is elevated so looks a bit odd. The main problem is how broad and stocky he is compared to man-sized LOTR models. I'll still use him in games on his other base. I'll just assume there's at least one 24-hour gym and access to anabolic steroids in Dunland.
Cheers for the vote too BTW.

Getting there. Just the arms and the torso to go.
Image
I softened some of the highlights on the stone of the club and added a few more to the legs and skirt. Added a few glazes of dirty brown into the folds and joins too just to increase contrast.

Made a start on the head and opted for the skinhead look rather than clean shaven. The glazes on the cheeks and nose go quite well with the skirt I think.
Image
Already I can see that the beard needs some sharp highlights and the dead eye could do with a tidying up.
Image

If I have time I'll try a bit more tonight but I've got a lot on today so I can't promise anything. Thanks for looking.

Battering rams with eyes... I suppose it means they can see what they are ramming :)

Orc painting - gorgeous. Maybe a teensy weensy bit too hygenic for your average orc but who cares - they look fabulous.

As for the one-eyed barbarian - he looks like a cross between Conan and some of the guys in the TV series Vikings. Hard as nails. Stunning painting!
