When in the fellowship of the ring in front of the gates of moria, gandalf reads "speak friend and enter..." He said friend so it should have opened right?

I believe the password needed to be spoken in elvish for the doors to open. So when gandalf said "speak friend and enter" in the common tongue nothing happened. If gandalf had said - "Sorry guys I'm just nipping out to Tesco for a mellon " then the doors would have opened.
Mellon is the sindarin word for friend.
