Ah yeah, of course. I don't think that should be too much of a problem though. The plaster on mine is only about 1 or 2 mm thick over the entire thing and was pretty easy to scribe out. I don't think it should that much more difficult to do it on the curved walls. Perhaps if your doing it however you should use gandalfs method of scribing out the brick details after it is dry rather than how I did it immediately once it was smoothed on as it would maybe be a bit difficult to get into the grooves with a file on the curved walls

That's good advice. I will have a go probably in the new year as I have quite a bit of Goblin Town to finish, and I suspect that whatever comes in the DOS boxed set and supporting range will occupy me for the rest of the year (as well as my UEJ back log which I would somewhat unrealistically like to have Thorin, Bilbo, Bolg, Azog ft and mtd, Gwaihir, Thrain, 9 Erebor Dwarves, a converted goblin town captain, eight mounted hunter orcs, two fell wargs, and Bert the Troll with the Roast Mutton finished before the new range is released!)

As for the tiled roof, I think it could do with a more thorough paint job. I like the look with the different sized tiled, maybe breaking the odd one will add a little extra.
The red / terracotta colour looks best to me. Highlight it up using something like a bleached bone colour and use brown and black washes for the shade.

@bilbo that sounds like a lot of minis to keep u going I have yet to purchase any of the hobbit sets. Not sure whether to get the goblin town set or see what comes out for DoS. I have literally hundreds of figures on sprues still plus a very large number of figures in their blister packs still from the entire BGiME collection so I don't really need any more haha

@gandalf yeah that was along the lines of what I was planning for the tiles, will give that a test tomoro and see what I like best

Here is another quick photo, not really much but just thought I would show you what I was working on tonight. This is the start of my fountain for the courtyard. The plan is to have a numenorian painted like a statue. Any ideas for the colour scheme to make him like a statue? I was thinking I would just go with a white undercoat and some grey highlights and possibly a grey wash or something, not really sure. I'll experiment with some things tomoro night

Looks great, and a pretty quick turnaround. Pepper it with a few nice details, bit of moss, a few washes on parts of the brickwork, that sort of thing and it'll be really special.

Hmm I hadn't considered that, that could look pretty good! I was planning to go for a sort of marble look but I could probably get a nice brass/copper look with some tin bitz and brazen brass highlights

Ok, not much of an update, just some better quality photos taken on my DSLR as promised rather than my broken phone camera.

I also have finished the statue for the middle of the fountain which I am pretty pleased with.
As seen in the photos the ballast in the courtyard is not covering it all so I will be sorting that tomorrow to ensure that their is a complete, even coverage.

Other than finishing off the stable roof, I think I am finished with the fort area for now. I just need to wait on my styrofoam arriving so I can start on the rest of the board.

What can we expect from the rest of your board? Just plain or with even more "extras"??

Thanks for all the kind comments everyone! Its very much appreciated! Especially since this started out as being a small quick project to build something to leave my miniatures on and for something to fill my leave time with.



My plan is to buid up a small surrounding space with a slope down to a river and a bit of a forest to the side.

I am also slightly juggling with the idea of trying to incorporate other areas of middle earth onto just so I can set up a few little scenes on the board. By this, I mean something along the lines of making the river at the bottom of the slope incorporating the bucklebury ferry or the forest being along the lines of fangorn so I can display my yet unstarted treebeard. It maybe wouldn't work too well based on the size of the board but its just a thought.

On another note, I've started wondering about what else to put in the courtyard. I.e. little details that would make it look more Interesting such as barrels orwhatever. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know there are a few good things along these lines in some of the BGiME mags but I can't decide what I would like to add in.

One last note, just as I was writing this post, a van arrived with my big order of Styrofoam so I might start work on the rest tomorrow

Have a look through Thormariloion for some ideas. Torches on the walls, water trough , hay bails, barrels etc etc, the choice is almost limitless

Just thought I would post another photo to show the sort of scale I'm looking at for my finished board. I just roughly laid out the Styrofoam that I just got to see the size (it will not be exactly as it is in the photo once I start). My plan is to have a small step coming down from the gate entrance then just a bit of sloping heading down. The top gaming tile is going to be cut as partly a slope and partly a small cliff edge. This is purely because I want to be able to have the boards designed in such a way that they can be taken apart and just laid on each other. This will save me having to stick the pieces together as I don't have any room to store it at its full size. I will start cutting tomorrow so it will let you all see the layout as I'm imagining it.
