Hey guys, some of you probably know me as I was a regular poster but I've been so inactive on the OR forums recently that I'm sure some people have forgotten me. I quite often pop on to have a look around, but I don't always post.

I haven't been doing any strictly GW hobby things for sometime now, but since I do such similar miniature work on my course I thought it might be nice to share. I work on a modelmaking course and I still often draw inspiration from the LotR films and this hobby. The reason I got into this area has been because of this community, if I didn't have the support here I probably would not have stuck with the hobby. So I thought I'd show you some of my work, and what others are doing in my studio's as a little thank you. I'll try to update this thread every so often with new work. This thread might be a little pic heavy, as I'm being lazy and can't be bothered to resize them.




A small Georgian house card model as one of our first exercises to do. Nice and simple and I felt at ease with all the practice I had done previously in this hobby. This was a to scale model, can't quite remember what scale now off hand though.




Followed by that we were asked by the third year animation department to make small head sculpts of their sketches. This was a really interested and fun project as this is the first time I've ever sculpted anything. I took to it quite nicely and felt confident enough to start sculpting in my own time.




The animators came up and we discussed what elements he wanted emphasized etc. Thankfully his design didn't change whilst I was working on it, as a few of the animators changed their sketches quite substantially. The story of this character is quite a sad one.




This is the project I'm currently working on. I only have a picture of the plans at the moment but I'll get more up later on. Constructing the base atm and have just started the floors of the house. Mostly constructed out of acrylic, styrene and mdf.




My self initiated project sculpting a Gondorian man in armor. I've been a huge fan of their armor and style - I just can't get enough of it. I've just bulked him out at the moment but the rest will come later. He needs a lot of smoothing out and correction atm. Any suggestions are always welcome.

I love the old man. The gondorian is looking good. It is interesting to see how others work. I would have done a face first then added the helm, yet you have chosen to do the opposite, as a stone/wood sculptor would. Working outside in, rather than inside out.

Do you work with ProCreate by the way?

As for smoothing, I had expected someone who's name I do not need to post here ( ) would mention some silicon clay-shaping tools. I personally work with an old dentist-polish-thingy, but the idea is the same, and it works like a charm!

That would be a lot of ProCreate. I suspect its some form of Chavant Clay.

Thanks guys, yeah it's nice to experiment with different types of media and what I've learn has been great and very useful. For the figures it's a wax based clay, can't remember what brand it again but I'll find out for you.

We've started working on architectural models since last week, I'm a bit behind on the posting so here's the stage I'm at at the moment. Base is MDF clad with 1mm styrene, whilst the house itself is acrylic backsprayed so that it has a nice sheen on the windows.




I've been meaning to get those silicone clay tools, I'll try and buy a pack of ebay sometime. What's the old dentist polish thingy like?

Thanks ukfreddybear, can't really say why I started that certain way - just the way I naturally work.

Okay, cool! I think I'll personally keep modelling in 28mm though, and for miniature games only. And for that, I've found the materials I like for different jobs (Miliput, GreenStuff and ProCreate).


I still want to get some of those, at some point. The dentist polish thingy is also made from silicon I think, or some other kind of rubbery material. It's small, a bit less than a centimetre in diameter, like most regular miniature sculpting tools, and it has a rounded cone shape. Because it's rubbery, it's better for sculpting cloth, as it creates softer edges, and it works like a charm for that.

That sounds very much like a cone tipped clay shaper to me! Clay shapers come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Yeah, that's why I had to claim it when I saw it, after I had heard you recommend them. I'm still meaning to get some more shapes, especially a flat one, for different jobs.

Anyway, Drumstick, the model looks very interesting, I'm looking forward to see this take shape!
