.......Miniatures.

Hi guys as the "Barrels out of Bond" miniatures hardly fit into any of the other scenarious, or the vast majority of tabletops and playing that same scenario with them for more than a few times is likely to ware a little thin, I think it is time that we took action and came up with a few of our own.

My first idea involves the Complete Barrel Mounted Thorins Company playing British Bull Dog against the Watcher in the Water. A 48" x 48" board of still water with a 2 or 3 citadel gaming hills as islands. The company must make it to the opposite end of the board and back and then can safely leave the table. If more of the company make it than are "Eaten" "Splattered" or "Saved for later" the Company wins. If not the Watcher wins the day. If after a couple of sessions it looks a bit one sided, Gollum in Conical can be added as either a hindrance or helper to the company.

I also like the idea of an aquatic maze with the watcher in it is well! Perhaps a flooded Moria lower level?

The Company are attempting to reach safety, but the banks of Anduin the Great swarm with orcs. On finding a consignment of empty barrels, they do not have time to make rafts or do anything other than take to the water individually and hope that the current will carry them far enough ahead of their pursuers. In the meantime, Gandalf and Ragagast are coming north upstream with forces from Lothlorien and Rivendell, and some of the Great Eagles are searching for them too.
Rough rules - the river is winding but flows fast, forcing pursuers to run, take shortcuts in order to intercept the Company. The wizards and elves are a small force but formidable. Have a couple of Great Eagles searching. The company cost their normal allowance. Pile on lots of orcs, hunters and wargs on either bank.
Gandalf & Co start off the table, with just the eagle scouts searching (they are not aware that the company is afloat). For each dwarf in a barrel, roll a die at the start of each turn - on 1 or 3 they veer 1 inch left, on 2 or 4, one inch right, on 5 or 6 they follow the current at full speed without deviation. If they hit the riverbank or an island in the river, roll a die - on a 1, the barrel runs aground and they have to disembark on whatever shore they are closest to. All other rolls, the barrel continues to float and they will be carried downstream.
Roll dies to determine if the eagles spot the Company and one of them summons Gandalf and the elves - it can be infantry of cavalry or a mixture, entirely up to the amount of points you want to invest.
To spice things up, throw in Gollum after the Ring and Beorn after the orcs.
For more variety, if they are far enough south, it could be Rohan to the rescue. Or maybe they are too close to Dol Guldur....
Have fun. Just remember, you don't want to go over the Falls of Rauros in a barrel.

Actually a lot of the Goblin Town scenery (well all of them actually!) look like they are shabbily constructed piers, and sit quite happily on aquatic terrain!
A flooded Goblin Town could be entertaining.

This is a fantastic Idea!

Maybe you could include some kind of sea creatures (Do they have crocodiles or sharks in middle earth?) which could act as obstacles.

Deffo have a roll once a turn...and if the evil side rolls a certain number he can make the watcher appear anywhere on the water as if its risen to the surface.

Or you could include an orc/enemy patrol boat (imagine nets and harpoons) that is trying to capture the dwarves so the evil side has an objective to catch/kill them?

Has every one forgotten the boat rules from the WD's? I will try to track down the numbers. Some good ideas here!

The river assault rules supplement was reprinted in The Best of the White Dwarf Magazine LOTR-ROTK #3

Not just there, it was in the (big hardcover version of) the previous rulebook as well - all the way at the back, after normal scenarios.

I quite like the idea of a scenario where the Dwarves won't use the barrels to escape, but rather to infiltrate hostile territory...

It could be like the Normandy landings in Shaving Private Ryan, but with Stumpies!

I'm sure there are sharks and there could be crocodiles in harad.

This is a really good thread. I'm loving these ideas. I especially like the one where Goblin Town terrain could represent bits of wood and buildings that are the only remainders after a flood.
