Hey guys, as my first 500 point dwarven army is complete I would like to expand the list towards 700 points with another warband. My question towards you is where you would see things that would need a major revamp.

The list:

Warband 1:
Thror
6 dwarves with shields
6 dwarves with spears

Warband 2:
Dwalin the young
6 dwarves with shields
6 dwarves with spears

Warband 3:
Grim hammer captain
11 grim hammers

Warband 4:
Shieldbearer

702 points, 8 might, 39 models

My major concern is if I should drop a grim hammer to give all the spear models shields, and if I perhaps should add in a monster for their hurl attacks against horde armies (I was thinking of Beorn, or Gwaihir).

If you guys could provide me with your oppinions on this that would be very much appreciated.

Regards,
Mortaal

I am going for a similar list and will probably be using Beorn too. I'm also curious as to whether I should even bother with shields as I almost exclusively fight against Gondor so the def7 is mostly useless.

Sorry I don't have much input as I have only used dwarves twice myself!

of course he needs shields, even vs gondor for 2 reasons:
- 1st its the bows, although not being mighty bows, gondor can field plently for cheap points, S2 bows would need 6/4+ to pierce your armour rather than just a 6
- 2nd vs heroes, gondor infantry relie alot on cheap heroes (or powerfull) that can deal the killing blow on your troops, having things that need 6s to kill you can show the quality of the dwarves.

The dwarven main problem is the speed and also the lack of bows(in case of this list) so I would highly recommend you to take the shields for that same reason, D6 to D7 means that for 1point more you dont get killed in an already highly value that you also force em to start to roll pretty decent on the 2nd roll to see if they wound you (on a 4+, not 2+ or 3+)

Not sure about that shieldbearer, he indeed looks awesome but you need to be carefull with that fella.
I would recommend you maybe replace him and some grimhammers maybe for gwaihir (hes a monster hero and cheaper than beorn)

and yes maybe grimhammers not being that good much of an elite, probably replacing them with shiel dwarf types while you let your heroes cut through enemy ranks....

Alright, fair points have been made to put shields on the spearmen, here is an updated list using purely Erebor:

Warband 1:
Thror
6 dwarves with shields
6 dwarves with spears & shields

Warband 2:
Dwalin the young
6 dwarves with shields
6 dwarves with spears & shields

Warband 3:
Grim hammer captain
10 grim hammers

Warband 4:
Shieldbearer

703 points, 8 might, 38 models

What worries me slightly is if I put any monster in this list I will pretty much loose an entire warband of warriors. No idea if it is worth the benefit of having a model that can hurl?

A possible list in that manner would look like:

Warband 1:
Thror
6 dwarves with shields
6 dwarves with spears & shields

Warband 2:
Erebor captain with shield
6 dwarves with shields
6 dwarves with spears & shields

Warband 3:
Dwalin the young
4 grim hammers

Warband 4:
Gwaihir

697 points, 8 might, 32 models

Beorn seems a little too expensive for an already expensive force. Let me know what you think.

Regards,
Mortaal

Personally I like the second list. Gwahir is definitely worth having 5 less models

Do you really need thror?
I mean I do run mine cause I dont send monsters and keep as dwarvish as I can, but hes kinda expensive for 1 fate only model despite his awesome profile.
I would replace him maybe for something cheaper like thorin with orcrist and oakenshield, seems far more deadly to kill foes. With those extra points you can fill up that warband 3 after all (although I would recommend 50/50 bettewn grimhammers and dwarves with shield) will give you more reasons to use 2 hands more often and a bit more sturdy line to break)

It depends if you want to be super competitive. To be honest, you don't really need the eagle and 3 full warbands are essential at this points level.

Stick Dwalin on a pony!!
It's mega cheap, boosts his move to 8", gives him the plus one attack on the charge and knockdown bonus meaning double strikes!!plus new rules allow two handed weapon use when mounted! Makes an absolute tank out of him!

The thing about being competetive is that you do NOT need to have everythign in your army be a cost effective uber model. Dr. Grant brings Saruman and Grima (205 points on a caster who isn't really as great as a wraith), and Lurtz, who is considered rubbish, and still pwnz noobz and wins tournaments because he is a great player, and knows his army well. So no, do not drop Thror, you have painted him excellently and the guy has a good profile, you can make him work :)

My opininon on Gwahir would be 'go for it'. 32 Dwarves is a big number considering they are all d6/7 and having Gwahir means that your opponent's scumbag models (aka shades, wraiths, shamans etc) will be harassed regardless of what they are hidden behind.

I'd say get rid of the hammers completely on a competitive level and unless you kjowbyoure jot playing goblins or orcs throw thorin in he's a beast
