Oh hello again. I don't have enough battlefield experience to decide which of these 3 options is best for support, so I thought I'd ask here.

All of these models costs exactly the same points

Citadel Guard with spear
MT Warrior with Spear and shield
Ranger with Spear

So as I see it (on paper) it comes down to F4 with bow/+1def&bodyguard or +1 defense.
I don't see why someone would take a warrior with spear (and shield possibly) over a Ranger or Citadel guard.

To me the Citadel guard seems superior in most ways. the middle ground of defense with a good fight and bodyguard to keep him in the fight. The Ranger I think is a close second being lightly armoured and no BG rule but providing double duty as missile fire.

Thoughts?

A disclaimer: I know very little about Gondor to please don't take my advice as Gospel.

The advantages of the Warriors of Minas Tirith here is the ability to go up to D6 with a shield, which is great protection against str3 warriors and bows. But against str2 bows or str4 warriors/crossbows, d6 is useless.

Quite often it is a good idea to support the higher defence front rank with a higher fight value spear support behind (as the spear lends it's fight value to the fight) so ranger or citadel guard with spear would make good support for the WoMT.

Although my own view is the citadel guard strength really is bringing that str3 bow to the table, as d5 is no help really in most of the likely combats you'll be in vs str3 or str4.

Anyhow, just my musings!

I used to field warriors with spear but recently I changed them with rangers and citadel guards.
Why? With the new Hobbit rules evil players are more likely to field monsters, the bodyguard rule allows citadel guards to charge without taking the couragetests. If they are backed by a hero with heroic strike, you can neutralize monsters rather quickly.
I also changed my bowmen by rangers with spear, just for the better bows.
And the best advantage with rangers or guards is that they have a fight value of four, combined with the special strikes from your frontrank they are devastating ;)

So I totally agree with you.

Definitely use rangers quite a bit for support, but also Fountain Guard with shields (as I don't have any Citadel Guard models).

Good point. I have a tournament in the GTA in 3 weeks but I think I might be able to convert some plastic warriors into citadel guard.

Lucky for me I decided I wanted to play like 5 years ago and never got around to it, although I bought 6 of the 24 model boxes for like $25 each. :D
