True.. good points. And the new weapon strikes are very good and the monster additions are brilliant.

However I don't like how the profiles and points have gone to multiple different new books. Especially when the bulk of the colour pages in the new rule book at the later parts of the book are somewhat unnecessary.
I get the feeling I was paying for a built in colour printed catalogue... of which some of the figures printed were very close to going out of production.

It is like marking an essay and finding the page count has been bulked out by pictures and the necessary content has been fickle.

However I understand that this hobby is becoming downsized in that the days of having every army conceivable are pretty much gone. What is intended is you see what looks like you and you make that army. It contains a few skirmish figures and you know that little army well. Tournament players are more to this liking.

But my opinions aside... it seems like supporting from a prone position is available... which may be terrific for those who want to go tunnel crawling into a dwarf or Goblin tunnel... as long as the fighting figure is sporting a dagger or blade hand weapon.

This could pose a very interesting scenario to clear tunnels. It might be a possibility to see that Cave troll go prone and support a goblin in front with his trident style spear in a tunnel he cant stand up in.

I agree about the split up armies thing.
When I got MOM three years ago its minirule book was fantastic, aside from dwarf-deprivation. I memorized every single profile, which has proved very helpful to this day. The sheer variety actually encouraged me to go buy more.
When I tried to go into 40k, the lack of access to other people's stats made it much less enjoyable.
The hobbit rulebook had all of the hobbit profiles up to that point in it, so not too bad.
If they had just put in pictures for like warriors of Erebor (I know they hadn't been released, but a teaser maybe?) and stuff it would have felt much more compelling.
The thing to remember is the wealth of scenarios - it had a lot of Lotr scenarios, and offered a glimpse into scenario world even though the scenarios themselves weren't storybook standard. And from what I've heard about the DOS book, it's much better than the "Profiles, Armylists, NOTHING ELSE" format that the LOTR armybooks are.

Any ideas on the supporting from ground with spear topic that was started... I just checked the text in the rule book, nothing else.

If I remember right if your soldier is knocked prone in a cavalry charge it does not knock the spear support over. So would not be so neat to know of. But perhaps a sourcerous blast or natures wrath ... might be neat to use then?

So would the next rule book be called "The Silmarrillion strategy battle game"???

We need to be real and consider that the game is probably going to decline and die off in the next 10 years.

So we will have to all get our heads together and make our own community survive. I suspect this will be the hobbiest more than the competitive tournament players... and the new rules will probably be somthing that a coordinate group of hobbiests can put together themselves.

I think the biggest hurdle t that will be the trademark lawyers floggin us well after the product has been removed from the web sites.

So it is quite apt really to think in that situation we will need to learn to support with spear from a prone position... fighting from the poorest of positions.
I hope that last line keeps me somewhat on topic?

The thing is, the SBG ruleset could be applied to so many things. Historical, other fantasy worlds, sci-fi. It's just so flexible. Would be a shame to lose it.

I don't think they're unnecessary at all. For me, a large part of GW's big books has always been the colour section and the photography. Whilst the hardback rulebook was expensive, it's a fantastic product and the colour section provides a really nice overview of the range and had a lot of love put into it. When I first got it I was surprised to see how much new photography there'd been for the LOTR range and really enjoyed it. Obviously if you don't want this material then you can get the small goblin town book but for I thought the colour/hobby section in the hardback was/is excellent. Relative to GW's other books it's not particularly expensive and I think it's a great book.

The Warriors of Erebor might not have been there but there were loads of teasers in there that made it appealing: Finecast Radagast & Goblin King, Elrond, Knights of Rivendell, Grimhammers, Yazneg, Plastic Eagles, Gwaihir and the as yet unreleased Company were all shown in there first 1 or 2 months before they were released.

Back on topic I stick to my feelings from the previous page for the same reasons. A prone model in a fight is desperately fighting for his life and is involved in something he has no control over - even when he's on the floor the fight still goes on. On the other hand a spear support is something extra you do to give yourself an advantage that your opponent should be able to do something about. In the same way you can shoot/Sorcerous blast a spear support I think you should be able to knock them down. I also genuinely fell that's the intent of the rule and if and when it's FAQ'd I'd bet good money that'll be the ruling.
