I must say it is quite a nerdy pastime, but let's face it that's only a bad thing if you look like the guy who runs the comic store in the Simpsons.

I happen to be a Bowyer/Fletcher, spoon carver, botanist, mycologist, Traceur(practioner of Parkour), bilingual, Skater, Vocalist, Actor, video gamer, Archer extraordinaire. And I can cook.

My point is, here that I love this hobby, but I am in no way defined by it.
If that happens to be a nerd then so be it. Just another label to throw in my CV lol.
For some of my antics

Show this to your friend see if he still thinks 'nerds' are uncool social recluses who spend their time like troglodytes arguing online about why jarjar binks is the worse thing to happen to Starwars.

So no more disembodied moaning about painting gold lines on hundreds of High Elves then? :) He enjoys every minute of it. Really. He does...

There are many worse things we could be up to than engaging in a creative, though-provoking, more or less civilised hobby.

I think this is more an age relative issue. Young people (teens in particular) struggle with jostling for a pecking order within their perceived social circle, and so try to avoid anyone within that circle discovering that they engage in an activity deemed by others to be uncool. It is quite sad but an inevitable part of growing up. Adult gamers tend to be more open about it in my experience, as they simply don't care what anyone else thinks about them. It just doesn't matter. Unfortunately for some youngsters it takes them a long time to realize that.

I was always top set at school. Did advanced Math classes, played chess and dungeons & dragons, and knew everything there was to know about the star wars universe. Was I a nerd? By that description yes. But no one ever called me one because i was also a track & field athelete, captain of the football team and popular with the girls. I was lucky enough to have the best of both worlds. Many only have one or the other.

Most people place limits on themselves. My father used to say "can't never could." I did not take art because I did not think it was "macho" I did not learn to later that choir and The Drama club was where the girls are. Who cares what people think don't put silly limits on yourself.

Embrace your geekdom your nerddom or anything else you wish to call it. Be proud of who you are and let the others be ashamed of their uniformity. To be different is what matters, never, never, ever be known as normal.

I could not agree with this more. Many of my friends had exactly the same issue during our teens. I was one of the lucky few who began to understand earlier that it didn't matter what people thought. The only advice I can give is the same as what a lot of the other guys have said; he doesn't have to tell anyone he does it. He'll grow out out that attitiude eventually anyway, most people do.

Yeah,I'm like a super nerd at school but no one ever calls me that. They just say "I'm weird" and I'm like "fine whatever". I'm fine with not being popular and can socialise with quite a broad range of people. The only people I can't talk to are the lazy idiots. The only comments that I get slightly annoyed about are "cut your hair". The funny thing is that I hate sport and I'm still in set 1 for physical education.

It is pretty nerdy. Who cares. If anyone judges you just shove your middle finger up in their face.
