The regulars on these forum may recall from another thread I started in which I asked for some advice on crafting a kitbash of the ranger from shadows over mordor. Well, I'll be starting the project next week. Before I do, I want to ask for conversion advice. Despite the fact I've been painting for 4 years and have performed weapon swaps, there are a lot of conversion techniques i have yet to perform (ie head swaps). So I ask you bretheren and sisteren, what tip can you offer for performing:

Head swaps
Repositioning limbs (as in cut, shift, reattach)
Sculpting cloaks, bandoliers, bags and other details

I believe it is difficult to give general advices for this cause it depends in case. Just surfing around and watching examples is the best way to gain experience imo. The "how" part is something obvious most of case and the subject instead of this is the "what".

Tips: Make sure the pose is physically possible (no unnatural arm bends, for example). Look at examples on other models for sculpting additional gear.

Well these are lots of questions at once! I'll try to answer actually some of them...

First thing: What is a bandolier? Is it really a belt for patrons? That is the translation my dictionnary told me, but I wonder what you'd need them for with LotR miniatures!?

Head swaps: I don't think there is much to say about it. Look for the miniatures you want to change the heads of, check at first whether the size fits and then cut the head(s) of. You can glue the new head on the miniature or drill wholes in each the bodie and the head and use a piece of wire as a peg (right word?). Then you take a piece of putty and attach it to the gap. Depending on the miniature you then have to sculpt hair (simply carve lines with a needle in it), fur (shorter lines overlapping each other) and so on, for these things it is the easiest to look at the structure and try to redo it.

repositioning limbs: Again not too much to say, as Goldman25 said you have to bear the anatomy in mind. Anything else is similar to head swaps.

Sculpting cloaks: Just take a look here, it is a (German) tutorial on how to sculpt cloaks by me. It is simply making a base coat with putty in the shape that you let dry. Then you role out some putty and attach the roles on the cloak to create folds. The last step is blending these folds together, very usefull tools for that are clay sharpers. I hope the pictures explain the most of it.

Belts: Just role some putty out and flat it. Then you can cut out a stripe of putty in the right size and attach it to the miniature.
Or you attach a thin role of putty that you flat on the miniature itself.

For anything else I can just tell you to look at some sculpts and imagin how they were sculpted. There are thousands of things you could explain, but often it is more usefull just to try out on your own.

I hope this helps a little, if not you're very welcome to ask me something (but I don't look in this topic too often, a PM could be useful  ). And please excuse the grammar and spelling mistakes, I am to lazy to read this whole post again... :-D

Cheers,
Bennet

A bandolier is basically a belt you wear over your shoulder. Like chewbacca wears. Making one would be like making a belt. Question: i know green stuff is sticky, but should I worry about gluing greenstuff down? Or is its natural adhesiveness sufficient?

It's sticky enough, no need for glue.

That looks like a great magazine or whatever it is. Is there an English translation? Or does anyone know a way to translate pdfs?

EDIT:

Google has a tool for translating documents. Download the pdf and save it, then upload it to the Google page.

Though it only translates the text and presents it in the browser without the images, so you'll need to flip back and forth.

Well, there wont come an English version of our magazine, as it takes much more work than you might think. Apart from this most members of our team aren't very good in English and we didn't find anyone who offered a translation.

Nevertheless some of my articles might appear in the Tomes of Wisdom soon...

Depending on how much time I have, I could offer to give a translation a try. PM me if you're interested (in German if you want ^^ )

Which is fair enough, but as I said in my previous comment, google has tools that can atuo translate pdf files.

Maybe you could post the sculpting & painting articles on this forum? Run the text for those articles through a translation tool (e.g. google), then Copy & Paste them over to an Article or Thread on this forum and add the photos. And list the credits for the authors/contributors and a link to the magazine.

That sculpting tutorial for cloaks looks great.

Well, what I know from some trys with google translater is that it is horrible!

Right now I am translating my articles during the football games. It is a good English training and then they can be put in the Tomes of wisdom...

For the painting articles I am just waiting for an answer.
