Can a prone model wielding a spear, still fighting as supporting a comrade in combat?

No, it should be under the prone area in The Hobbit book.

...on a related note... can a model, fighting as a spear support, instead make-way for a friendly model in an adjacent combat, if their own fight has not yet been resolved?

Yes as they aren't technically in the combat. You'll just lose the spear support from that fight.
