I have to agree that goblins with bows are likely the best way to go as the volume of shots would make up for the lack of damage compared to elven bows.

I'm not sure how I feel about his Missing Scale rule. On one hand it makes archery actually viable against Smaug like it should be. On the other hand, it does seem to make him very easy to kill. It is a very thematic rule though, which I personally really enjoy, as I prefer more narrative games. It's a real shame that I'd have to sell all my other forms of entertainment in order to afford him.

That's where his free point of will and his fire breath comes in. Taking out a 2in radius circle every turn is a pretty good way to take out a bunch of archers every turn.

Radagast on an eagle doesn't have a staff of power, so no free point of will every turn; this seriously limits his ability to cast spells without someone that can grant will nearby.
Thorin's company looks incredibly strong, particularly Dwalin and Dori, 3 attacks and no penalty for the 2h weapon.

Also, wouldn't a regular dragon with breathe fire be able to just kill smaug outright? Strength 10 with a 2+ shoot value that auto kills, and Smaug has no fate (regular dragon has 3). It's only half the points too.

While I'm disappointed in Radagast, I'm VERY pleased with Saruman, Elrond and Galadriel. Saruman can give Gandalf the White a run for his money as best wizard, Elrond got loads more dangerous in combat and Galadriel just took the best of both versions into one model.

For me its only deeply dissapointing that the mirkwood elves do not have heavy armour... just look at their multi layered armor and tell me it gives the same defence as lake town militia !!!!

What is to point for elves to be clad in armor if it make no difference against al those str 4 orcs... REALY :o

even the almost naked bolg gets heavy armor. I think I will just house rule that the mirkwood elves get heavy armor for +1 pts because i find this absurd! would def. have bought less of them knowing their stats

I really expected them to have 6 D. Look how much stuff theyre draped in!!

Im upset by that as well.

Azog looks pretty dang good. 2 more fate AND an excellent (for the bad guys) special rule for 25 points is pretty amazing. Hopefully we'll get another book in January with the dwarves and bad guys.

The armor is just to keep with the theme for the elves and his original profile for Bolg.

Yeah azog is better. That rule is fierce.

Mostly glad to see they didn't once again make a bunch of new armylists you have to ally with, instead expanding various existing lists where logical.

The new profiles do seem somewhat strange occasionally, such as Mirkwood Knights only properly protecting Thranduil #2, or Azog and Bolg, both supposed to die, having 3 Fate all of a sudden.
Smaug is somewhat massively over-the-top, but in line with his film portrayal I suppose. Galadriel is cool, should buy a new figure and paint it up all ghostly.

I think the reason is to make it seem like its not just for the battle, but for the second two movies of the series....like it being incredibly hard to kill them overall. I like them.

========================

Overall, I like the rules. Legolas and Thranduil are SUPER powered. Bolg is great. I love him. I love Bard too and Id totally buy him if the lake towners werent so expensive. His rules are cool. Love Dwalins 4 attacks and Thorins rules....heroic combat every turn!? Damn.....

The other profiles are pretty neat too.

Having seen the film, considering how long and cheesy both their final fights are, 3 fate seems appropriate.

I have to echo others thoughts here about the heavy armour, it is a disappointment. But, there are a lot of S4 guys out there so D6 with shield isn't as great as it used to be, then again D4 for the spearmen and archers does kinda suck...

Thranduil and Legolas are beast, Nuff said and I'm pretty happy with the cavalry. I was hoping for a 16 point elven cavalry unit, however I thought they would be D5 and not have a special rule. Oh well, I'm still quite pleased with them!

There seems to be quite a bit missing that's in the film. I guess there will be another wave at some point.

Yes, I noticed this also. But he now has Nature's Wrath and rides a Monstrous Mount, which is nice. It's all about synergy, Bombur and Gandalf can add Will.

Did we see Radagast giving his staff to Gandalf in the movie? I don't honestly remember.

Some questions have arisen for me, regarding these new rules.

Smaug is stated to knock down everything bar Mumakil. Does this mean he actually CAN knock down a Great Beast or is this an oversight?
What happens when Smaug moves into combat with a model that ALSO doesn't back away -say, a Mumak or heaven forbid, an opposing Smaug?
Does Saruman's one re-roll on casting and resisting apply to one re-roll per TEST or one per TURN?
Can Elrond, Lord of the West benefit from Lindir's council, thus gaining a free Will each turn?

a) vs great beast ya it knock her off
b) complicated question,
c) eachtime saruman cast a spell OR attemp to resist he can re-roll one of his dices (not sure where the complication on this rule)
You can only cast 1 spell a turn
You can resist spells several times, however it says oyu can only re.roll one dice(question you might wanna say is that within multiple resists can he re.roll 1 dice of every single resist attempt?
d) does Lindir´s rule tells exactly which tpye of elrond it is? if its not mentioned what tpye of elrond (normally elrond, lord of the west (surname or such) means any elrond you field will be affected.
Just like mirk palace guard specialy rule, it says Thranduil and dont tell you which of the surnames he covers just the name of the character, so any thranduil including the king of the woodlan realm will also be affected.

I'm referring to taking multiple tests. Say Saruman is targeted by more than one spell during a turn, or both resists AND casts a spell in the same turn. :)

I thought the rules for the Great Beast stated it could not be knocked down, but I can't seem to find that so I guess I'm mistaken.

I was kind of hoping that Smaug could only be killed by a hero who spent a point of fate somehow - as it seems that such a might beast could only really ever been slain by a hero that was fated to kill it.

I think the only thing that matters with Smaug not backing away ever is that he can never be trapped. For gaming purposes, you would still move everyone else back if he loses, just to have the inch gap.

Holy Devlan Mud, Galadriel with banishment, lets see who is a spirit, balrog, gulavhar, Sauron, ringwraiths, dweller in the dark castellans of dg and all dead things can take D3 wounds when she channels it!
Seriously powerful but so specialised
