I've added an extra highlight to the GrimHammer captain as suggested. Although the photo doesn't show it very well, it has made a difference:

Image

I've also started and finished Grimbold. Although I seem to have painted a lot of Rohan recently, I really enjoyed this model especially creating a colour scheme distinct from the Rohan I already had. It's turned out similar to the GW scheme.

Finally started work on 4 of the remaining 8 Rohan warriors painted to in a similar scheme to Grimbold to represent Helmingas.

Thanks all

4 Helmingas now completed:

Nothing earth shattering with the above but I quite like the scheme and they stand out from the 'normal' warriors of Rohan. 4 more to do in this scheme, then I might go back to the dwarves and complete a couple of the heroes I have (Young Thorin and Balin). I think 4 standard troops seems to be the optimum batch size for me having experimented with different volumes over the last year.

Very nice work on these. A good choice of colours with the cloaks the best for me.
The bases look very neat.

The cloaks look amazing!
Did you use a green wash?

Thanks for the comments.

@Aule - Yes, I used a GW wash, Athonian Camoshade. It took a 2-3 layers until I was happy with the final result.

It's been a busy week or so of painting but getting online has been a problem so a few updates below.

I have finished the warband of 8 Helmingas now. All painted in a uniform colour scheme, a group shot is below:

Image

I have also started and finished Young Thorin and Balin. I was looking forward to painting these to add to my Army of Thror collection. I made one of the layers of Balins clothing red to continue the theme of the rest of the army. I struggled to find a way of incorporating red into Thorin though. I thought about a full red robe but wasn't brave enough!

Image

Finally, I have painted Eomer foot and mounted for my son's Rohan army. I was a bit nervous about all the detail on the model before painting it but I got over this by breaking it into sections. I found this was very enjoyable and rewarding to paint in the end. I am really pleased with how he has turned out and I think he looks great amongst all the green of the Rohan.

Apologies, the quality of the photos is not good!

C&C, as always, welcome.

Great eomer model, very neat and clean paint job. The shields on the cavalry base are a nice touch give some extra detail to the extra space :) Nice job !

Eomer, Thedred and Théoden are all very tough models to do the armour on and you did a great job with Eomer.

Very neat. It's a difficult model to do. Well done.

Thanks for the comments all.

I've started on 2 of the 6 Riders of Rohan in the 'to paint' box. The intention is these will be Westfold Redshields to accompany Erkenbrand (also to paint). I think I'll paint these in pairs and decided the first two horses would be a brown colour. I've done 2 horses before (Shadowfax and Eomer's mount - see earlier in the thread) but this was a new colour scheme for me. I've only done the horses so far (plus a quick layer on the mail and cloak) and am really pleased with how they have turned out.

It has certainly made me a lot more confident about painting horses in future and am looking forward to painting the other 4 soon. I will attempt the get the riders done next though.

Really love the Eomer.

Like others have said the cloaks look really good on the infantry.

Good job on the horse. It's easy to vary them too, without much hassle. Remind me to send you an article if you're interested in pushing it a bit further

Whoops, can't believe its over 2 weeks since my last update. Thanks, as always, for the comments and feedback.

@ Gene, that article would be great please. I am pleased with the horses for troops but it would be nice to push my technique for heroes.

I've finished the 6 Westfold Redshileds since my last update and I am pleased with the results. They took a bit longer than I was expecting as there was a lot more layers of clothing than I originally thought. I've gone for 3 different colour horses (2 of each). I've also prepared some Warriors of Minas Tirith ready for priming over the last week as well as starting a couple of terrain pieces (a large hill and small campfire) with my son (no photos yet!)

A few shots of the Redshields below:

I'm Jealous, Rohan is such a cool army to work on. You are doing great. Like the scheme changes.

Erkenbrand up next and I have made a start with a view to finishing him this weekend. This is the last of the Rohan to do for now, might add to the collection at a later date but quite looking forward to moving onto something different. WIP shots of Erkenbrand below:

Not sure if the armour is a little too bright but it might just be because the rest of the model is still black. Will probably wait until I put some more paint on the rest of the model before deciding whether to do anything more with it.

Question - For mounted models, do you guys paint the horse and rider separately and then assemble or assemble first? So far, I've assembled first and then painted but wondering if it might be easier to do it other way!

Cheers all.

Looks good man. I don't think it is too bright, it looks just about right. It will hide it self a bit more when the surrounding colors are in place.
