What do you think about this?:

Beorn
Aragorn Elesar on horse
Bilbo with sting and pony
Gil Galad with shield and horse

I hope that the points are correct, because I just calculated it without the books, just in my head.

Well yes, it doesn't have a thematic background but this is only because I think that a good army with theme is almost impossible because all the strong heroes did not meet each other ( apart from some elves)

I still thinks ents are built to take him on. Also I don't get why everyone is so scared of Smaug, sure he's powerful but he dies really easy too you know, Khazad guard piercing and 2h makes a quick job of him

It's a good thing ents don't suffer extra wounds against fire attacks, however it's weird that they don't. Fire and flaming weapons are not very common thought, Smaug and Kardush are the only ones that I can think of.

The fire doesn't need to have an advantage against ents, because it auto kills ;) only against treebeard causing d3 wounds before fait would be nice ;)
but still I don't know how you want to kill Smaig with ents?!

one shooting phase all you need need is to shoot smaug with rocks, all you needs is to roll 6 to hit followed by a 4 to wound this happens twice and Samug is dead
They are S10 at shooting

But I don't think that you will get two shooting phases. And rolling a six followed by a 4 is not easy. Maybe treebeard can do it ones by using all his might. However, siege weapons would be better because you only need 2x 4 because they have auto kill.

Why would you need a 4-6-4?

You hit on a 4, then you need a 2 for not getting a fail on the siege chart (don't know the English name) and then a 4 for wounding Smaug. That is

0,5^2 *5/6= 21%
1/6*0,5=8%

Problem with siege weapons:
If Smaug is within 6" of a good model you are not allowed to shoot (shouldn't be that difficult with 12" move and compel).
Problem with ents:
You have 18" range (just like Smaug) and aren't allowed to throw stones if you move. So if you have the ini Smaug always knows if you are able to shoot or not.

Mordor catapults would be good for that problem. However, I don't think that siege weapons aren't that good against Smaug.

1 miss, 2-5 slight deviation, 6 dead on. He isn't a building.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the rules but I think that siege weapons always auto kill, not just on a six. You don't have to role a six because all these armys have 700 points. That means that you are only fighting against Smaug. On a 2-5 you have to nominate a target within 6 inches or take the original target. Because Smaug is the only miniature, you can't nominate an other target, so you hit him on a 2+.
By the way: I know that the rules don't mention it, however, the Mumak counts as a building so I think that they forgot to mention in Smaug's rules that he counts as a building as well.

You are right. If Smaug is the only model the evil player fields you get him on a 2+. But you don't autokill but need to wound him twice (models with more than 10 wounds).

You are right.

If you know that you will have at least one shooting phase, this army is very good (in my opinion):

Warband 1 11/12
Engineer Captain
1 Battlecry Trebuchet with Engineer Captain;
2 Battlecry Trebuchet
----
Warband 2 7/12
Engineer Captain
1 Battlecry Trebuchet with Engineer Captain;
1 Battlecry Trebuchet
----
Total: 700 Pts.

nope, still isn't correct, doesn't take two shots to kill smaug with siege weapons
20-10-5-2-1 dead, it halves his wounds every time
you only kill him in 2 shots IF you have S10 and roll a 6 to hit each time to hit him.

Also, Trebuchets have a minimum range from which they can shoot, All smaug needs to do is get in that distance and well there's alot of wasted artillery on the field. IIrc the minimum range happens to be the maximum range of Smaug's fire breath, so yeah all Smaug needs to do is go call a heroic march turn one and bam no more gondor

I don't have the English rule book, so this might be a translation problem.
However, in my book is written(translation by myself): Such target is not automatically killed, it looses wounds as much as the half of its profile wounds.
I think that this makes much more sense because why should the next five hits cause the same damage as the first? I mean it is the same size of the rocks, why should they be less deadly?

You are right with the minimum range, however this army would work if you deploy far enough from each other.

Do you have an army which would work?

You have to deploy 36"+Smaug's base size.
Besides Trebuchets would not work against anything else.
