I'm painting some black dragon Easterlings at the moment. I've tested a couple of different schemes to differentiate between upgraded models and basic troops. All black cloth looks a bit drab and my nmm skills are not up to giving them black armour. I was thinking about just adding bits of black to the cloth like this:

I have struggled to paint black (it always ends up looking grey) but it's not too bad there. Does anyone have any other ideas how to make these guys stand out (I was thinking half red, half black or various black stripes)? Cheers.

You can always clip of the antennae, much like the Battle For Middle-Earth II archers helmets. That'll give them an immediate differentiation in addition to a paint job.

The black looks good, in the Shadow of the East book it shows doing gold trim on their red cloth. Perhaps black trim instead? It'd compliment the black armour.

Looks good as it is though!

I would paint their collars black. I did that for my Dragon Knights and Amdur and it looks pretty good. I haven't done it for my basic troops, but it should look good too.

Black trims' not a bad shout. That might look good on the skirt bit with a black collar.

Yours looks great as it is man. There are many different ways we can differentiate but to each his own. I could see those guys youve done perfectly.
