I was looking for my own knights (they've gathered a lot of dust sadly) to see what I did with them. Turns out I actually drilled holes in both the rider and the horse, gluing the pin into the rider so they could be removable but still have some kind of hold so they don't fall off.
If you've already glued them to the horses, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Quite a few of the mounted heroes are attached to the horse so you'll just have to be more careful when painting the two components.
Do you have a color scheme picked out already? Looking forward to what you come up with.

Didnt glue them on yet, still in doubt! What did you do with the shields?

It looks like I glued on the shields before I started painting, but I undercoated the model first before gluing the shield. It's been years since I've painted them. So most of this advice is based off of memory and looking at the model. I guess that if the shields are already glued, anything that you can't reach with your brush can act as a shadow or something.
Here's a photo of one of mine as an example of what I did to pin them to the horse. You can see the paperclip in the rider and the hole in the horse saddle.

I generally prefer to paint the the shield before gluing because I find it easier to paint that way, especially the back of the shield.

If you are painting for battlefield then your paintjob is great and there is nothing we can recommend to change. I loved the grey paint scheme on your dwarves. Keep it up!

So I started painting today with my first miniature being a warrior of minas tirith. Before I wanted to progress I wanted to get a few tips/tricks and feedback.





The only thing I did so far was:

Flesh:
Base - Mournfang brown
Layer - Cadian flesh (2x thin layers)
Wash - Reikland fleshtone

Armor:
Base - Leadbelcher

However, I did not dare to do any highlights yet on the face and armor simply because well.. I can't get my brushes pointy enough..

I made a wet palette, and put my paints on there



These are my brushes (left one is S Layer and the right one a starter brush)



They are not pointy at all, I can't manage to get them pointy.. Do I not use enough paint or? I also got a size 0 and 1 W&N series 7 brushes, but I thought I would only use them until I am conformtable enough with painting. Mind you that this is my very first time! Any tips are welcome!!

Edit: Got myself some brush cleaner, so they look way better now .

So I finished my first (ever) five miniatures (hope it's not too dark). Learning slowly at each stroke with my brush . To do the white tree on the shield was quite hard without a pointy brush ..





Any feedback is welcome! What I find the most annoying is how to get a good point on my brushes.. I am using some W&N brushes, some craft store ones and GW ones.

You will likely find your wet pallette works better if you use parchment paper cut or folded to size over a sponge in a container of water.

So I finally finished my first (ever) 24 soldiers of Gondor!



I am pretty pleased with them, although not perfect in anyway and with the stunning miniatures I see other people paint. I will try to make some more pictures with my Nikon since the current picture is not very detailed...

And ofcourse I will do some basing, but I don't have the materials yet! I was thinking to buy some basing materials from Army Painter.

- Battlefield Rocks Basing
- Swamp & Highland Tuft

Did not had the time for any painting this week (hopefully this weekend) but I figured I would already do some preview for myself and some friends on how the battlefields looks. What I got now for scenery is just a bunch of ruins of middle earth sets. I am planning to add some more green like bushes and trees on MDF bases together with the ruins. I use a battlemat from deepcut studio, a 4x4 (3x4 actually, obviously too large for my table sadly).

My first small army is finished! It contains 24 soldiers of minas tirith, 1 flag bearer, Cirion & Faramir. I didn't try out any eyes yet, maybe in the future

Really good looking unit. Painting looks pretty neat overall. Keep it up - practice is going to be the key in improving but honestly, for a first set of painted miniatures, those are very good and will look good on the tabletop

Thanks! Any tips on what to buy for basing? I was thinking about Army Painter basing materials since GW seems a bit overpriced..

Woodland Scenics have great products at very good prices...large cannisters of coarse talus, fine talus, all kinds of flock, bushes, underbrush, lichen, etc.

Good job MacCollac, for be your first miniatures they are more than good! Good choice to not make the eyes, the risk to ruin the rest is very high with bad eyes!!

You could always use real dirt like I do. You have to be careful though that nothing alive is in your dirt like bugs or something. Might be safer to go with the woodland scenics if you don't want to risk bugs emerging from your bases. They have great products! (Woodland Scenics does, not the bugs!)

Yesterday I started working on my orcs for the first time. I am trying to paint around 400 points of Gondor and Mordor. Meanwhile a friend of mine who is also starting with LOTR SBG is painting up around 400 points of Isengard and Galadhrim.







I am content with the orcs, they come out okay although a bit dull.. I first used warplock bronze (tin bitz) on their armour but it was way too shiny so I did another layer of leadbelcher on it. I am also pleased with the ringwraith. I know, not the hardest model to paint but still . Was also the first time I started to use my drybrush and created some nice effects with rhinox hide on the bottom of his robe to create some sort of dust/mud effect.

I still have a lot to paint (no haste ) but friday I will receive two sets of dwarf warriors and two sets of wood elves ! Their leaders will be Thranduil/Legolas/Haldir (unarmoured version) and Balin/Gimli/Dwarf Captain . Of course I will first finish Mordor and Gondor.
