Continue to be impressed with your application of the ivy! It's looking great! Do you plan to do any other weathering where you aren't applying ivy?

Yes, especially the masonry needs more work.
Well, the photos do not show all the colors - but adding ivy increases the contrast in quality.
So:
More washes, more plants (what I cut off the ivy also looks interesting) and eventually pigments.

Thinking that I thought that I was almost done…no. Definitely NOT.

I just hope that I won‘t miss the border to „too much!“

I am running out of ivy... but i would say it is enough.
But still, i will need to rework the weathering.
And some more plants, some adjustment of the more biting type of green on some plants

and... i realized that there is a limit on the number of fotos in the gallery.

This is really coming along nicely! It is a tough choice of when too much is too much on adding bits to a piece of terrain. I always think I have done too much and put the piece aside but when I look at it again I always add a touch of paint here or there, or add another piece of vegetation that I might be using for something else. Nature isn't neat so it's hard to say too much.

You might have to start using a third party image application like Imgur (I find it easiest to use for here)

Thanks!
Well, so far, at least i say that it is not overdone yet.
In the meantime i have added a few more leafs to the ivy and stippled both the ivy and the bright green bushes with diluted green ink - definitely a good decision. Now it looks much more like ivy and the bushes do not hurt the eyes that much any more.
Some flocked areas also received dots of brown wash. That was a bit too dark.
For the masonry, i grabbed my water colors to add a brown filter to some stones and in general much light green. That passes quite well as moss/lichen/...
The water color was a spontaneous idea - also because it is quite easy to remove if it turns out to be a bad idea. I diluted it about to the degree for aquarell painting. Nice!

I still think i could use some more plants... let's see what i will use.
And then pigments for the walls.

One thing has definitely not been my best idea:
I still need to add an mdf board as a base. Means... the whole process with earth, stones, flock and everything else ... again. That would have made quite a lot of sense much, much earlier.

Imgur and the like are not something i am really fond of... but maybe i will give it a try.
Let's see whether the terms&conditions are worse than those of tapatalk.
For my SciFi projects, things are easier.

I have reached a tipping point.
I am still working on more plants - those still get better.

But weathering on the masonry has produces rather mixed results.
The green watercolor ranges - after drying - from „ok“ to „I am glowing like Minas Morgul in a starless night“. Good thing is that I could remove most of it - or tone it down.
Similar goes for pigments. The result in some places is satisfying - but in others it took a while to wash some of it away again.
For the large stones, white pigment worked quite good for the gaps. However… between the smaller stones, it did not work at all.
So I went back to what I did before… watered down plaster. It can eventually look ok… but it is extremely messy and requires repeatedly cleaning up after drying again and again. And it really does not appear to be worth the effort. The stones are still … underwhelming, pigments did not produce good results here. Perhaps if will give washes another try, but with every step, the stones move more and more towards „featureless gray mass“.
Photos to come…
Help is highly welcome

I'm hesitant to offer help; what may work for me may not work for you, what has worked on one type of material may not work on what you are using, different paints have different results, etc.

That said, all I could offer is to try dry brushing with different colors. I have also found if I dry brush in one direction with one color and dry brush with another in a different direction it provides a different result than dry brushing always in the same direction.

Good luck!

Edit: Just thought of something else you might try - stippling with a stiff brush. Just randomly, not too much on a side or area.

Thanks - and don't worry, you actually brought me to an idea. The stipling is something that i will give a try, though first with foam. The brushes that i have available are just not usefull for that, but on SciFi vehicle models, i have already used foam for weathering.

And i still have glazing in the quiver, so i am not out of options.
Drybrushing is something i tried in the earliest stages - and on this specific surface structure, it for some reason just does nt produce satisfying results. Must be due to the material (pure foam).

This is what gives me the headaches:

On the other hand, this worked better:

And here with more plants. Almost done, i will just tinker with colors again and try something else based of crushed, natural leafs:

So... aproximately 5 washes (3 of them puctual) and another drybrush with brush & foam later, the difference is subtle... but i am satisfied.
The foto actually displays the colors harsher than they are...

You may also notice a few more (tiny) leafs on plants that previously had no leafs.
Just one photo to show the difference on the same section as above.

I would say... painting is as good as i can achieve it. Any more bears a growing risk of doing more harm than good.

So, on to the MDF base plate that i stupidly forgot prior to painting.
And then pictures of the whole thing.
... now i really need to paint a Nazgûl (the only one that i have...), a certain ranger and a few hobbits.

That looks great. Are you going to use it for gaming, or is it just a display piece?

Thanks :-)
Regarding Display or for playing…
It has the right dimensions for playing and - from my point of view - also avoids some tactical disadvantages from the FW version.
It is just that I do not have anybody around to play.

And even worse… the bloody thing is so big that it does not even fit on a cupboard in the living room.

So… more likely a dust-magnet in my office room.
Or even worse… cellar on top of my cubic-yard of shame (yes, literally…)

That's a shame. I've solo'ed the Weathertop scenarios a couple of times and found that they work pretty well. Between combat and spell rolls there's enough variation in outcomes that playing them was interesting, even if it was impossible to outthink myself tactically.

It would also be an excuse to post more pictures. :)

Ah yes, the hobbyist equivalent of building a boat in the basement. Been there, done that.

That is ... disturbingly true.

Anyway, i have the mdf board now and can proceed.

And all the while, a scratchbuilt Halo Pelican sits next to the Weathertop and waits for it's paintjob to get finished... and a base.
It is quite hard to resist the urge to begin with the next projects before having finished those two.

it seems that i have forgotten to post pictures of the last few steps...
I need to make way more photos...

But months have passed since the previous step anyway.

The last things i did were adding more and more plants.
And i needed to repair the ivy. No, it did not get damaged... but sunlight bleached the parsley i used for the leafs and i apparently did not apply enough green previously.
Now, it looks even better than before.
