I just picked up the first issue of the new Lord of the Rings Chess collection.
These magazines contain a 52mm Chess Piece of the Lord of the Rings character.
I saw it advertised on TV and was extremely impressed on how good they looked, however (I dont know why this was a surprise), after getting the first issue, the paint job looks like it was done by a 4 year old.
The Lord of the Rings Collctors series (another 52mm collection) was exactly the same.
Below is a picture of my figure that I bought beside an advertise figure on their site.

You can see the site Here

I dont really mind paying £3.99 (introductory offer) for the first issue, even if the paint job is a big let down, I can simply repaint the miniature myself, however with future issues being '£6.99', I am unsure if I will continue the collection.

It looks terrible indeed Brian! What a huge difference between yours and the one advertised! I think I'd definately complain about that!

But I'm sure they will all look awesome once you've repainted it... If you buy all of them.. lol, you have a lovely chess-set of 32 figures for £220.68 and many hours of hobby-time!

;)

The paintwork is aweful but that is usually the case with these giveaways, don't forget they are mass produced and the people that paint for the publishers are on peanuts for doing these. They probably get a handful to paint and a very tight deadline to work to. I have the complete Napoleon at War collection all 100 issues with the minis and they are he same. I intend to redo them sometime but haven't started yet. Is the mini fairly well detailed if so repainting them should not be a problem. I think I will investigate this partwork as one repaint a fortnight if that is the timescale between issues is not difficult to do.

The detail is quite good Tim, albeit I only have Ellesar to go by.
I have just this minute started to repaint him, so I'll post a pic up when he's done...see you in 2007 :P

I would really write them and attach all pics (their advertisement, the real figure, the one repainted by you).
tell them you would know enough people paying attention to the painting who would buy such a chess game if decent painted but not like that you've received. maybe it was an unfortunate accident that you received that one, but for future minis you expect better ones.
offer your service of a constructive critique to have a look as soon as another prototype had been painted. (attach samples of your painting to prove skill and ability to judge).
and for compensation the might in return deliver you the issues for free... ;-)

Looks ace, that is me sold I think I will see if I can get hold of it myself now. Tell me did you strip it first or just paint straight over the original paintwork.

That looks fantastic now, Brian!

I hope this series comes to South Africa. BGiME never did, but the Collector's Models series did, and I subscribe to that, if only to use the magazines as a reference when I paint GW models. :)

I haven't seen these in Sweden either, but I doubt I would buy them. Less money to give to GW :)

Your paint job looks much better, I'm sure the manufacturer would give you a job

keep up the good repaint, i think if the detail is good 6.99 aint bad for a mini that size, however X31 for a set is a lot of dosh and you could probably but one of the excellent pewter sets for less :?
