Ok I want to take photo's of my mini's but the digital camera my parents have is 'not so good'. I have enough money but I don't want too spend a lot on a thing I never even tried ( exept my parents one ).

so the question: what is a basic, normal, good and cheap ( about 50 too 80 euro ) camera?

**EDIT** does it have macro?? how much megapixels are required?

This is awkward as you are in the Netherlands and I am unsure of what discount outlets are available there. Compact cameras are not my thing but here are a few examples I got:

http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/photograph ... l-cameras/

Do some web searches, put in you maximum budget and see what comes through. Then to get technical appraisals go to:

http://www.dpreview.com/

This is the best on the web, they are neutral so the opinions and findings are for real, not a sales pitch.

I'm using a Kodak EasyShare 4.0 Megapixel and it is a good all around camera, with Macro setting. I paid just under $100 in the US, I'm guessing you could find it for less than €100.

This is my third Kodak, I started with the 2.0 and the 3.0 Megapixel and have been happy with them all.

Heck, you might even want to check eBay. It's less than a year old, but already Kodak has a newer 5.0 Megapixel version, so you could probably get a good deal on the older versions.

Man, I need to find a good camera too.

My wife prefers the point-and-click camera's. I bought her a 2 MegaPixel Nikon CoolPix 2100 around 5 or 6 years ago, when digital cameras were still new here. This is the camera I use to take photos of my minis, as it takes better pictures than the two digital cameras I purchased subsequently.

I didn't care about cameras, until the hobby grabbed me, and I wanted to be part of this community. I bought a 5 MegaPixel Nikon CoolPix 5200 for myself, last year, hoping it would take better pictures. It didn't. In fact, they're worse, at least where minis are concerned.

Just recently, I picked up a 4 MegaPixel Canon A420, because it was going ridiculously cheap, on promotion at a major store. It cost me the equivalent of 80 Pounds, which is very cheap for a digital camera here. The pictures aren't bad, and it has a 1cm Macro, but they're only equal to the tired old 2 MegaPixel Nikon, at best, not better.

I am now prepared to purchase a "proper" camera, that will take crisp mini photographs, even if it means spending more, but I still don't know which one to buy. The beauty of the old 2 MegaPixel Nikon is that it takes good pictures under any conditions, with no tweaking required. The newer cameras I bought take "blueish" pictures under artificial light, and I have to fiddle with the settings to compensate for it. That old Nikon is wonderful, only I want something crisper and clearer now.

There is just so much out there, and it seems some cameras have better macro features than others. If I felt I could trust the salesmen, I'd ask them, but they're always trying to push their favourite on you, or the one that brings them the most commission. None of them have been mini painters either, so they don't really understand what I want it for. :)

Good luck with finding your camera. I hope you have more joy than I have had!

I should point out that I now use a Kodak Easyshare DX4530, which is 5.0 MP, however previous to this (before knocking it to the floor and smashing the LCD), I used a Kodak Easyshare that was 3.1 MP, and never had any problems with it, plus it had no real Macro settings, just a 'close-up' setting.

Reading my previous post again, it seems I'm totally ignoring you guys with the Kodaks. Sorry, it's not that. I should have said something about it. I don't really see Kodak here where I live, at all. They must be somewhere, I suppose, but Canon, Nikon, and Fuji really dominate the market, with a little from Sony and HP.

If a Kodak is good enough for DurinsBane, it's certainly good enough for me! If it snapped those dioramas and minis, it is obviously capable of what I want from it.

I have a kodak easyshare C530, 5.0 Mega Pixel, sounds great doesn't it?

BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE A MACRO SETTING!!

In fact, the reason I'm in the photography forums is because it no longer works. Yes folks, I got this camera in November and suddenly today it decides not to respond Now I need a new camera. Pah, the last time I buy a kodak that's for sure.

So, I too need a new camera. I'm willing to spend anything below £100
Any recomendations?

See if you can find a Vivitar ViviCam 6300 - I got mine with a 512 card for about $300 (just over the 100 quid) because they have a new 8 Mp one out now

Olympus FE-115 (see Morgul_King post)

Very Good Very cheep (in Poland about 600 zł - around 100 Ł- 200 $)

5.0 Mpxl, makro (also 2xmakro option) so you can amke good photos form distance even around 1 cm. I've bought it for my borther and tested it for 2 days:D My Haldir's pics were taken using this one. In addition it has stabilizer so photos are clear and you don't hace to have any tripod or Devlan Mud like that.

Thought I might 'bump' this as I have a couple of questions...
Amazon is selling the Olympus FE115 for 150GBP is this a good price, as it seems nice (description says 'supermacro' function of up to 2cm). Also is it a good camera for other stuff(apart from taking photos of minis).

This is quite an old thread so I was wondering if there have been any 'developments' in the camera world recently.

Thanks for the help so far (Sorry MoS for highjacking your thread)

I can assure You that for our purposes Olympus FE-115 is perect.

But price You mentioned...
In Poland it now costs around 575 zł (below 100 Ł/ 200$) that includes battery charger (with 4 batteries) and cover (or SD memoty card instead).

So i advise YOu to wait or keep searchin check out eBay this should work out ;)
