Looks like we can expect a first expansion of this huge board game, presenting the battles of the third age.
The release is expected in October 2005.
Check out the site for some nice previews of the new mini's and corsair-ships etc!!

October 2005 it says, that's the month of the European Toy Fair! I'm getting it! :D

Good news indeed Isc. :)

I have this game, along with LOTR Risk, LOTR Trivial Pursuit, and LOTR Confrontation, so I welcome new additions.

I rather fancy boardgames, but that's another story. Thanks for the update.

Anybody buy this one yet?

I see it on the shelf every time I vist my favourite games store, but I always have another priority. I have 62 boardgames as I type this, with 5 games on order at the same store. Clearly, new games grab me more than expansions, but this is LOTR, so I'd like to have your thoughts.

I have read reviews on boardgamegeek.com, but I know you guys better, and am looking for the opinion of people who don't make boardgames their life (as do so many on "the geek"). The really interesting feature of the expansion for me are the "mini games". The siege of Helm's Deep, for example, can be played. I am hoping these are lighter and quicker than the full game, allowing for a fairly quick game with people who don't know the rules, after a fairly brief explanation. I may be dreaming, but that would be nice. :)

Ehmm.... hi.... it's been a while.

I have the expansion and it's a nice addition, but not a must-have. The operational battle games are a bit shorter than the original, but I suspect their replayability is not quite as high - haven't played them that much yet.

I'd only recommend the expansion, if you do play the base game regularly. Otherwise it will probably just sit there unused.

That makes two of us, I have the Original War of The Ring Game from the 70's and that is awesome if you have the time and the patience to play it.
I might just have to check this out though.

The original game had a big campaign map and hundresd os card counters representing different factions, I remember having a game with my mate that lasted a couple of days and wasn't finished until his little brother came stomping in like a cave troll right through the middle of it.

Yeah, that was usually the problem with those 70s and 80s US wargames. They took ages to set up and play. I never ever managed to finish one of these games (I tried a few).

The 2004 game in contrast takes me and the buddy I usually play it with about 2.5 to 4 hours. Quite manageable.

The two games have really nothing in common except the name and the theme.
